Dealing with Frozen Programs

Sometimes programs freeze up or don’t seem to be doing anything. I try everything and they still won’t move. Is there a way to take care of this?

I find this happens all the time when I’m editing a large image file, working on a Word document, or even surfing the web. What I’m about to tell you is a “last resort” method—you’ll lose any unsaved data so proceed carefully.

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Task manager.

Vista users: Choose “Start Task Manager” after pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

Once in the Task Manager, click the “Applications” Tab. Look for the program that is hanging up.

If it says “Running” then give the program some time, it’s just taking a while to do its thing.

If it says “Not Responding” then right-click and choose “End Task” or highlight and click the “End Task” button.

You may need to do this several times before it takes.

Hopefully you didn’t lose much data when you killed the application since you save your data often, right? 😉
