How can I get rid of those alert messages that always show up in the taskbar? You know, the ones that tell me new updates are ready, etc.

Well, those alerts are there to inform you of things that are going on within your computer, but I understand that they are sometimes annoying. Usually, these messages are telling you that there are updates available that you can download or that new hardware was found, etc.

There is an easy way to disable them from ever showing up again, but before you do that, you need to make sure that you keep an eye on your taskbar so you don’t miss any of those important updates or anything else.

If you can promise that, let’s continue! Keep in mind that this tip is for Windows XP users only. If you’re using Windows Vista check this tip out. Also, if you don’t have a certain type of antivirus on your computer, you may not have the option for the security center.

1.) Go to your Start menu, Control Panel and look for the Security Center icon. Click on that.

Also, keep in mind that you need to be in the category view of your Control Panel for this to work. To get there, open up your Control Panel and at the upper left hand corner, click on “Switch to Category View” (if you’re not already there).

2.) After opening the security center, look under the title Resources on the left hand side of the page. Click on “Change the way Security Center alerts me.”

3.) From this screen, you can choose which things you want to change under the Alert Settings. Uncheck any that you don’t want activated anymore. You probably will only want to change the Automatic Updates setting though, because the others deal with your antivirus and firewall and you should always have those running. When you’re done, click OK.

You may want to restart your computer when you’re finished just to make sure the changes take effect. Then the next time you browse the Web, there won’t be any more annoying and frustrating messages! Sounds like a deal to me!
