“What? Did I read that right?”
Yes, you did read it correctly and yes, we can copy text without actually completing a copy / paste.
I’m quite positive that you’re eager to know how, so I’m going to get right to the business end of this tip.
- You start by selecting the text to be copied.
- Hold down the Ctrl key.
- Drag the selected text to another location and release the mouse button.
Voila!
A duplicate of the selected text in the location you chose without a single Ctrl + C, right-click or “Copy” button anywhere to be seen!

I see this “drag and drop” method as overblown. I tend to have trouble holding down the button on the mouse so I can drag the material to where I want it. I drop it, then have to go back and pick it up again, and again, and again. Copy and paste works way faster for anyone like me.
Hey,
This is possible in Word 2007 also!
Jeepers, my wife was right…
I didn’t know all the good stuff!! 😉
Nice tip!
