Help! How Do I Update Java?

Erna from Kentucky writes: Could you walk me through getting Java going? I need to update it. Step-by-step and not too fast. I have the Mozilla Firefox.

From your question Erna, I will assume that you already have Java installed on your computer and need to update it. If you don’t have Java installed, you’ll need to go to java.com and download the program. You’ll also find some excellent troubleshooting advice in the Need Help section.

Java is on the list of plug-ins that Firefox automatically disables because of security concerns. If you want Java to function, not only does it need to be up-to-date, but you’ll also have to make sure that it’s enabled in Firefox.

You’ll need to open your browser and then select the Firefox drop-down menu in the upper left and select Add Ons.  If you’re using Windows XP, it will be under the Tools Menu.

You’ll see a list of Add Ons like Java and Flash.

If you don’t have the latest update of a program, you’ll get a notice with the option to update. Simply select Update Now.

As I said, Java may be disabled default. So you’ll need to make sure that you choose Enable.

If you click on More, you’ll be able to see when the program was last updated.

If you experience an issues with Java, Flash or any other Add On in any browser, it’s always a good idea to check and make sure that program is up-to-date and has not been disabled in your browser. Firefox Add On center is an excellent way to check if your programs are up-to-date and enabled.
