Apple Unveils $99 Plastic iPhone

Apple has introduced two iPhone 5 models, the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c.  Both devices run on OS7. Neither of these devices seem to be that “next big thing” critics feel the company needs to stay on top in the highly competitive mobile device market. What stands out about the 5c is the price and material used to manufacture it, while the 5s has some notable new features. Let’s take a look.

The iPhone 5c comes with a suggested retail price of $99 with a contract.

The 5c features a 4 inch Retina display, an 8 megapixel camera and a new FaceTime HD camera. According to Apple execs, the phone is “unapologetically plastic” with polycarbonate body reinforced with a steel frame.  The frame doubles as the device’s broadband antenna.


Apple introduced some flashy microfiber cases featuring bold colors and circular patterns that allow the body of the phone to show through. The phone comes in blue, green, pink, yellow and white and can be mixed and matched with the cases to create different color combinations. The cases are $29 and come in blue, green, pink, yellow, black and white.

Apple promises better connectivity with with download speeds up to 100 Mbps and dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi support for up to 150 Mbps and Bluetooth 4.0. 

The second model is more expensive, but has more features. The iPhone 5s is billed as the most forward-thinking smartphone in the world with a starting price of $199.  The 5s features the new A7 chip.

The phone also includes the new M7 motion coprocessor that gathers data from your movements to improve power efficiency and can also be used by developers to create improved fitness apps.

The new Touch ID security system uses fingerprints to unlock your phone. A laser cut sapphire crystal and a capacitive touch sensor to take a high-resolution image of your fingerprint.

The improved camera features a faster auto-focus, photo capture and video stabilization and the new True Tone flash, that Apple says makes flash photos appear more natural. It also includes a new Burst Mode and slow motion video.

The 5s has an anodized aluminum body ad comes in gold, silver and gray. Six leather cases will be offered in beige, black, blue, brown, yellow and red.

Apple promises improved connectivity on this model as well.

The phones will be available in stores on September 20.
