Amazon MatchBook Offers Discount Digital Copies of Printed Books

Amazon is offering customer who have purchased print editions of books on their website the chance to purchase Kindle e-editions of those books at a substantial discount, even free in some cases.

The program is called Kindle Matchbook.  Amazon says more than 10,000 books are already enrolled in the program including authors such as Ray Bradbury, Michael Crichton, Blake Crouch, James Rollins, Jodi Picoult, Neil Gaiman, Marcus Sakey, Wally Lamb, Jo Nesbo, Neal Stephenson, and J.A. Jance.

Print purchases from as far back as 1995 are eligible.  Prices for the books range from $2.99 to free. The company says the bundling of print and digital editions has been requested by customers for many years.

When the service launches in October, readers will be able to look up their history of print book orders and determine which books are eligible by going  to the Kindle Matchbook site.

Amazon offers a similar service with AutoRip that allows you have instant digital copies of physical music purchases.

As a book lover, I’m hoping this is just the first step towards a free digital copy of a book becoming the norm when you purchase a physical copy. I enjoy physical books, but sometimes an eBook is much more convenient.
