Where can I get a licensed copy of Windows 8 do need to buy Windows 8 to change over from Windows XP. I have my copy of Windows 7 from my laptop, can I use my Windows 7 copy to change over from XP. If so can you tell me how? Since they are saying after Jan their will be no more support for XP, which I completely love. I hope I am making sense, I just don’t want be left out and have to go and spend a lot of money to buy another computer to get help if need it. Thank for any help you can give me.

Support for Windows XP will be ending in April of 2014. Carrie, you will need to purchase a copy of either Windows 8 or Windows 7 in order to upgrade. You probably can’t use your copy of Windows 7 from your laptop to upgrade your other computer , unless you happen to have a copy of Windows 7 that is licensed for multiple installations. If the copy is licensed for multiple computers, that information will be in the documentation.

You will most likely have to pay for a copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.

You don’t necessarily have to buy a new computer to upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.  It’s possible that your old computer is compatible. Windows does have tools for checking if your computer will work with 7 and 8.

Click here to use the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

Click here to use the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant.

There’s no need to panic, but it’s time to prepare for your upgrade.

  1. Although Win 7 or 8 may run on your XP computer, take time to consider if it is really worth your while to spend $100-200 for the Windows License to run on a very old machine that is likely to break down at any point.

If you can afford it, you can get a low end new computer for $200-500 that is built for Win 7 or 8 AND is much more powerful than your current machine, as well as being new.
