Help! How Do I Stop iTunes From Syncing With My Phone?

Vicki from Decatur, Alabama writes:

I love your site and I learn so much from it. I look forward to it every day. I have an iPhone 4 and I have lots of music on it. It downloads automatically when I do upgrades or back-ups on my computer. I have lots of music because my granddaughter likes music. I need to know how to get this music off my iPhone and keep it from downloading every time I plug into my computer with my phone. Can you help?

Vicki, you need to disable auto-syncing in iTunes. Now don’t plug your phone in yet. Let’s open iTunes on your computer.

In the upper left-hand corner there’s a little box that’s half dark and half light. Select the arrow beside it.

From the drop-down menu that appears, choose Preferences.

A window will open. You’ll want to choose Devices at the top.

The Devices Preferences window will open.

Tick the box net to Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.

Then choose OK.

The next time you plug your phone in, it will not automatically sync.

Getting the music off your phone is a bit more challenging. iTunes works by syncing your devices with your iTunes account. It really isn’t designed to for removing music from an individual device. But I’ve added a link to an article that might help you through the process.
