Why Is Facebook Sending Friend Requests Without My Permission?

Theresa from New York writes: A friend accepted a Facebook friend request that I “sent,” only I never sent one. Do you know what’s going on?

Although Facebook’s support page specifically says this situation you described can’t possibly happen, there are forums across the Internet filled with people complaining about this very issue. While it’s not entirely clear why this happens, it probably shouldn’t be too surprising that issues like friend requests getting sent or received without any user input occur occasionally.

The world’s most used social network currently has more than a billion people signed up, with Facebook stating that around 750 million people log in daily. With a network that huge – and with frequent changes being rolled out – its no wonder that glitches occur from time to time, especially considering the way Facebook has been changing its “reach” and “sponsored posts” algorithms, affecting who sees what and from whom.

If someone accepted a friend request you didn’t send, be sure to first report the issue at this location, as providing feedback about it can help to ensure the problem gets fixed and it doesn’t occur again.

After reporting the issue, you can simply remove the unwanted person from your friends list. Head over to their Facebook profile, click the “Friends” button near the top of the screen, and then select the “Unfriend” option.

Removing a Facebook Friend

If you don’t want to potentially hurt the person’s feelings by un-friending them, you can instead set it so their posts don’t appear in your feed even though you remain “friends” (of course, they will still be able to see and comment on YOUR posts).

Click the “Friends” icon and then select the “Get Notifications” option. With that option removed, only those posts from that person that Facebook deems “important” (containing key words about life events like “pregnancy,” “divorce,” etc.) will appear in your feed.

If the person’s posts continue to appear in your feed and they are still able to comment on your updates, you can always block them, which prevents all communication of any kind. Just simply choose the “Report/Block” option in the list and follow the prompts.

In the event that friend requests continue to be sent without your knowledge, be sure to change your Facebook password and run a full spyware scan on your computer, as someone else may be accessing your account.

    1. They could have created another FB account that isn’t blocked Or it could also be one of those cases where someone has stolen someone’s name and is using it to send friend requests.

  1. I have just received a notification that my friend request was accepted buy some blonde headed girl in a song with her booty face the selfie block. I have a girlfriend and needless to say this threw up some red flags. I thought I know I didn’t send this personal friend request because my girl monitors my Facebook and that would be a dumb things to do so I told her the truth. It’s a big fight and some Screaming and then me accusing her of sending the friend request just to set me up then after looking this up online we realize and it’s possible butt the weird thing is she wanted me to delete the blonde friend I never sent a request to who has 4000 something friend and everytime I try to delete her Facebook says they cannot delete this person at the moment please try again later. I’m not into conspiracies or anything like that but that is weird and seems like I’ve been targeted or some crazy shit like that. Anybody have anything like that happen to them I know why I can’t delete this blonde fake profile having person?

    1. Likely the reason you can’t delete this person is that the account has already been discovered to be fraudulent by Facebook and is in the process of being deleted.

  2. I receive dozens of friend requests every day and it’s been going on for a very long time. A few are from people I know, most are from people I’ve never heard of. Because I don’t know which ones are legitimate and which ones were apparently added by Facebook I cannot respond to any of them. I am really fed up with this and wish Facebook would put a stop to it. I do not want to block friend requests because I am willing to accept those from people I do KNOW. This has been going on for too long and I wish it would stop.

    1. Facebook isn’t adding the friend requests. Someone is sending them and sometimes they are fraudulent, but they aren’t sent to you by Facebook, but by those people.

  3. Twice this week people whom I don’t even know, but live in my area, have accepted my friend request that I don’t even know how to do. I’m extremely annoyed-no one knows my password and why would anyone hack into a computer to add friends-ridiculous suggestion. Facebook better address this problem and keep your victims advised.

  4. It has happened to me several times. I don’t like it and as soon as it appears I cancel it. I have gotten requests from people I don’t even know. Facebook needs to do something about that.

  5. If you look at your requests sent – you will find facebook has sent a bunch to people you don’t know. Don’t know why that happens.

  6. My problem is someone keeps sending a friend request in my name to people who are already my fiends and saying I won a lot of money and somehow they could be part of this. I changed my password 4 times and contacted FB with no help. Any suggestions?
