Microsoft Patches Internet Explorer Flaw – Even In XP

Microsoft has found a patch for a severe flaw in Internet Explorer that could allow attackers to gain control of your computer. This vulnerability was so severe that the company is even patching versions of IE that run on Windows XP, despite discontinuing security support.

The company did emphasize that XP users should not expect continued support for the system.  If you have automatic updates set for Windows – you should receive the patch when your computer updates.  Or you can run the updates manually.

iPad Sales Fall

iPad sales took an unexpected tumble in the first few months of 2014. Apple sold 16.35 million of the tablets down from 19.48 million for the same period a year ago. Apple CEO Tim Cook blamed “inventory issues.”

There was good news on the iPhone front, sales were up 18% over the same period last year. The iPod on the other hand, had a sales drop of 51 % year-to-year with less than 3 million units sold.

Some experts say iPad and iPod sales are falling because the iPhone has more and more features making the other devices less useful. Others point to an increasingly competitive tablet market offering Android and Windows tablets at varying price points, some for less than $100.

Facebook Picks Up Another Popular App

Facebook has just purchased the popular activity tracking app Moves. The app makes note of the number of steps you take or the time you spend on other activities. This follows Facebook’s $19 billion dollar purchase of WhatsApp and $2 billion dollar purchase of the Oculus virtual reality tech.

As was the case with WhatsApp, the company promises that Moves will still continue to operate as a stand-alone app.

Amazon Prime & HBO Strike A Deal

Amazon Prime Video will be the new home for HBO content on demand thanks to an estimated $400 million deal. The multi-year deal means that Amazon Prime is the only place online for big-HBO content such as The Sopranos, SIx Feet Under, The Wire and Deadwood. The first content will arrive on Prime Video no May 21 and other shows like Girls, The Newsroom and Veep will become available down the road.

HBO GO will also become available on the Fire TV streaming box by the end of the year.
