How Do I Stop Pop-Ups In Words With Friends

I play Words With Friends on my tablet and every single time I make a move an ad pops up. I have to watch at least a few seconds of it before I can get back to the game. How can I get rid of these pop-ups?

There’s one solution, Shawn. You can pay for the full version of Words With Friends.  It will cost you $4.99, but you will be spared those commercials. Otherwise, those ads are just the price you pay for your “free” app.

  1. Way to tell it like it is Cynthia. How can some people pay $80-90 a month for a phone and think $5 for an app they use everyday is too much. I guess too many of us have gotten used to the “Free” apps situation. Though it sounds like this game’s ads are more intrusive than most which simply display at the bottom all the time instead of popping up.

  2. I had the same frustration and for sometime, didn’t know how to even buy the “pay” version (I use a Kindle Fire) because it was not listed in the app store; however, I finally found that option in the menu within the game. It is well worth paying for it – not only did the ads stop coming, the game itself runs much smoother.

  3. Unfortunately you guys don’t realize people play on facebook and there is no option on facebook to buy the app….

  4. My mother in law wants a words with friends version without pop up ads. We can’t delete her current version on her iPad and buy the $4.99 version. Then box always comes up saying open, without the $4.99 option ever appearing.
    ???????

  5. I THINK IT IS SNEAKY OF YOU TO TELL US WE HAVE TO PAY IN ORDER TO NOT GET THOSE ANNOYING ADS…NO OTHER GAME IS LIKE THIS…I REFUSE TO PAY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE OF ANNOYING ADS…TOO BAD..I LIKE THIS GAME

    1. Actually, Deborah – many other “free” games do require you to pay to upgrade to ad-free version. When you think about it, to maintain a game, you need to make money on it. The money can come from people paying for the game or from advertisers. But it has to come from somewhere or there would be no way to support the games. Just like television, you can watch ads or pay extra for premium ad-free services.

      1. I just did pay for the upgrade. It is S9.99, not $4.99 as mentioNed above. That is ONE expensive upgrade if I may say so myself.

  6. I would like to get the the words with friends app without pop up ads…if I delete the free version…it says it will delete all data…so all current games will be lost. Is this correct?

  7. I have the paid version, but unfortunately the moronic developers didn’t consider their own ads. I get constant urging to buy their hindsight tool or to sign up for community match

  8. I don’t begrudge an ad every now and again but on Facebook an ad after every play is ridiculous. So what I do is play my word, highlight the url and as the ad appears I press enter and the game continues with the ad gone. Still annoying but not as much as those ads are.

  9. I get how to stop the ads between turns. How about the ads running on the bottom of the screen non stop as I’m playing? It bogs my computer down something awful. I’m sure there’s a setting somewhere and I haven’t located it yet. Anyone have any ideas?

    1. Colin: did your get an answer re those ads beneath the game board….as you say they really bog down the game and most times make it impossible to play a letter.

  10. No, if you upgrade from within the game, you need not to worry. It will upgrade without changing anything and it will keep your games.

  11. Have just gone into Settings. No option to upgrade 🙁
Tried to download the paid App, didn’t work…

    1. You need to be in Setting in the game, not in Android. Go to the very bottom of your home page and tap settings. At the top of settings, you’ll see a header that says Ads. Then Remove Ads with a buy now button.

  12. I want to buy words with friends for my HP Stream 8 but as it isn’t android, even google play won’t let me download the app. I am more than happy to pay for the game to get rid of the ads that are between moves and also the side ads in facebook that are encroaching onto the player board. Ant
    Any help?

    1. An HP Stream is a Windows computer. The Google Play Store only sells apps for Android. You would need to check the Windows app store to find the version for your device.

  13. I play Words With Friends on Face Book on my Mac Desktop and would love to Remove Web ads and I am willing to pay. I have searched everywhere and tried to follow instrctions but it is as if there is no option…..Can someone help me ??

    Thank You
    Bonnie

  14. I have the paid version and like others I also play WWF’s on FB and today ads started popping up on FB’s WWF’s.

    WTF?

  15. I bought the ad free version a long time ago and it worked fine. However, I have recently been getting annoying pop up ads at the bottom of the screen after every move. I can’t stop them. To my mind they are ads and I paid to stop them so why are they appearing.

  16. After every move I get a blank white square with Zynga in a red box on the upper left corner with another little white box under that big white box that asks me each time to “Enjoy the very best words with friends experience on Facebook with no third party ads between moves and to buy for $9.99.”

Then after each last move it tells me that I’m out of moves. I know I’m out of moves, I don’t want to buy anything, and I don’t want to see the blank white square that I have to refresh each time I make a move.

Please, can someone help me get rid of this

    Thank you

  17. I purchased words on my computer and it is add free. I use the same account on my android tablet but it says I have to purchase to remove adds. Do I have to purchase again. Thanks Maree

    1. When you purchase the paid version, you’re purchasing the app. If your PC and tablet have the same operating system (Windows 8 for example), you can use that app for both devices. If not, you’ll likely have to purchase the app that goes with that OS. Now is you purchase the Android app, it should work with any Android device – The app purchased for your iOS device will work on any Apple device etc…

  18. I have enabled ABP (Ads Block Plus)it works great but what started a few days ago is a blank Zygna screen after every word I play. So annoying!

  19. For iMac users – Go to Preferences/Security/Manage Website Settings/Look for Words in the list/BLOCK ADS.

Not sure how this would work on a PC. But it works on an iMac.

  20. I understand there will be an ad between moves on Words with Friends lasting a few seconds. This is the “free” version. However, now a new pop-up advertising another game is preventing me from playing the Words with Friends and I cannot get rid of it unless I close the game, and it comes up now every time. The only solution I’ve found is that this horrible pop-up doesn’t occur when I use my Samsung Tablet.

  21. I paid for the premium but now get pop-ups from Words with Friends for a weekly challenge that will not let me close it unless I Accept the weekly challenge and then I get a message saying I didn’t complete the challenge but challenges me to another week. I don’t want to participate in the weekly challenge. How do I elimate this pop-up?

  22. Aaaagh! Stop the flippin’ weekly challenge crap! It means continually shutting down he little box which tells you that you have completed 16% of something you weren’t doing in the first place. Stoooooop iiiiit!

  23. I do not. Mind the ad pop ups but the one for Wells Fargo Bank just stays and stays…..20 To. 30. Minutes. Enough is enough . I tried even turning my I pad off and it still stays….

  24. Can we please disable the Weekly Challenge. I hate it. It really messes up the enjoyment of playing the game. It’s for fun, not a “bet you can’t get this many points”

  25. Can we please disable the Weekly Challenge. I hate it. It really messes up the enjoyment of playing the game. It’s supposed to be for fun, not a “bet you can’t get this many points”type of game.

  26. I want the weekly challenge to STOP!!!!! I don’t play it and yet it keeps popping up all the time! I have to close it every time I go to play word. If this is automatic you need to allow access to those of us who do NOT want to be involved. It’s making playing the game extremely annoying.

    1. Just tried that. Weekly Challenge is not specifically itemized so I opted out of everything. All that happened was my score in the weekly challenge box reset to 0 and is now incrementing from there. Grrrr! I hate this “feature”!

  27. NO ONE likes the stupid Weekly Challenge. Do away with it!!!! It is annoying and a reason to STOP playing WWF.

  28. The weekly challenge has completely taken the fun out of playing Words With Fridnds. Most of the friends I play against hate it as well. I am considering deleting my paid version. And giving up the game. Please give us the option to opt out of Weekly Challdnges.

  29. Myself and ALL of my friends are opting NOT to ever play WWF. We have a friend who is going to build another app with different name with NO ads.

    1. Interesting idea. That’s how great new products are born. How does he plan to support the online gameplay? By charging for the app? Or will it be limited to off line gaming? Or is he willing to support a server for just friends to play on?

    1. I cannot use the chat portion because the pop up ad covers it.. Makes me extremely frustrated. How can I delete or move that ad?

  30. Happy to pay, but there doesn’t seem to be a premium game available on the Aps store any more. Absolutely sick of the ads. When will Zynga get the message!!

  31. There’s a”remove ads” option hidden in the menus (settings) but it’ll set you back$13. That’s a bit cheeky, especially as it was$2.99 in 2011 and $4.99 in 2014. I recommend uninstalling it and trying the competition.

  32. Accidentally erases words with friends with no ads. How do I get it back .? Can’t find in App Store. Am willing to pay as before

    1. If you download the standard version and sign in, it should recognize you as someone who has purchased it.
