How Do I Transfer Pictures From Memory Card To 8.1

Just starting to use WIN 8.1. I have some photos on a SD card and a Sony memory stick. How do I transfer the pixs off the cards and onto my PC. It seemed a lot easier with XP. Keep up the good work.

Good news, John. It’s not complicated at all. First of all, put your card or memory stick into your computer or a card reader that you have plugged in to your computer. Windows 8.1 should detect the card and put up this notice:

Tap or click on the notice and you’ll be offered a choice of what you’d like to do with the card. Since you want to import photos, choose Import photos or videos. The photos will automatically be imported into your photos file into a folder named with the date of the import.

If your computer doesn’t recognize the memory card immediately, type This PC in the Search Charm and then click or tap on the icon.

Your memory card or stick should be displayed as a removable drive. On my PC, it shows as D because my computer doesn’t have a DVD drive. On yours it could be E or F or another letter depending on the number of drives in use.

Click or tap on the drive to see its contents. You can then drag and drop the files you wish to transfer into a file on your PC or you can copy and paste. I’d suggest making a file for the photos first in your Pictures folder. That way you’ll keep all of your folders together.

  1. I have done all of these things and my Acer Aspire V does NOT recognize the SD card in the slot. Doesn’t pull it up when I insert it and doesn’t show up when I go to My PC. I have used an SD card on every other Windows operating system I’ve owned for 20 years and I have NEVER had this problem. Is it Windows 8.1 or my computer itself. Computer is three months old.

    1. Cassie – have you tried other memory cards? There’s no reason 8.1 wouldn’t recognize a card if the the slot is functioning properly. But cards can sometimes be defective or just go bad. If your slot won’t recognize any card, the issues is probably with that slot on you computer. You might consider plugging in a USB card reader to see if it can detect the card.

    2. I AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH 8.1 … NO MEMORY STICKS, OR SD CARDS ARE RECOGNIZED. I to have tried everything….did you find a solution????

  2. Thank You for your Help. This information was exactly what I was looking for!!
    This is Greatly Appreciated! 🙂

  3. I finally got the pictures I wanted to transfer off the memory card to my computer. However, now I can not locate them in my Photo Library under the file name it put up on my screen when I got them to transfer over. The name of the file is 2016-04-20 and it has 157 photos supposedly transferred to this file but where in blazes it is hiding now is beyond me as there is no file in my photos library with this as the name! Sometimes I hate Windows 8.1 and wonder now why I ever thought Kodak’s easy share was difficult when I first began to use it! It was a walk in the park compared to this system.
