Windows 8.1 Taskbar Won’t Come Up

James says:

When I look at my email in Windows 8.1, I can’t see the clock. How can I make it show up?

Hi James,

It sounds like you must be using the built in email app to look at your email. This makes the taskbar, at the bottom of the screen with all your icons and the clock, go off the bottom of the screen. Generally, unless some changes have been made, you simply need to drag your mouse down below the bottom of the screen, and the taskbar will pop up. (Bonus, if you checkmark “Use Peek to preview the desktop when you move your mouse to the Show Desktop button….” if you move your mouse to the empty space to the right of the clock in the taskbar, you can see you desktop and hide all your windows.)

However, if somehow there’s been settings changed on your taskbar, you’ll need to fix that if you want it to pop up. Go to a blank spot on your taskbar when you are in desktop mode and right click.  Then click Properties. Make sure the Taskbar tab at the top is open. Then see if there is a check mark in the box Show Windows Store Apps on the taskbar. If not, checkmark it. (Or if you don’t want to have the task bar, make sure it is unchecked.)

This allows the taskbar to pop up when you are in the Windows apps. You can also get to this option by swiping from/pointing your mouse to the right edge of your screen, going to Settings, then Change PC settings. Choose PC and Devices, then Corners and edges. Then make sure to set Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar to on. (Or Off, if you don’t want it to come up.)

  1. Sometimes when I mouse down to the bottom of the page, the task bar will not come up. I have to minimize the page and then maximize it again for the bar to come up. Then later, at some point, the problem starts again. I don’t know what I’ve done to make that happen. Nor how to make sure the task bar comes up every time.
