Game Review: Doctor Who: Legacy

This is for all of the Whovians out there, and you know who you are.  If you don’t know that you’re a Whovian, but can name your favorite doctor (mine is number 9) and favorite companion (for me it’s a three-way tie between Sarah Jane Smith, Rose Tyler and Amy Pond) in under three seconds, then you’re a Whovian.  Simply put, Whovians are to Doctor Who what Trekkies or Trekkers are to Star Trek.

So, for the Whovians out there, as well as lovers of turn-based RPG’s and gem-matching games like Bejeweled, I proudly give you DOCTOR WHO: LEGACY.

(The sharp-eyed Whovian will see that one of the Doctors is missing, although there is an empty space for him on the left hand side.  That would be the fourth Doctor, Tom Baker, who, although being a favorite of many a Whovian, is kind of a notorious jerk when it comes to doing ANYTHING in tandem with the other Doctors.)

In Legacy, you control the Doctor (Matt Smith, the 11th initially, but later you unlock others) and a team of five companions as you do battle against some of the Doctors dreaded enemies, such as the Daleks and the Cybermen.  Each Doctor and companion has a special power that they can use when their power meter is full.  The 11th Doctor, for example, can deal 500 hit points of damage to all enemies, while River Song can convert green gems to red.  Your team’s hit points are comprised of the total hit points of the team members, which means that the higher your team member’s levels, the more hit points you will have and the more powerful your attacks will be.

You deal damage to your enemies by matching three or more colored gems to match the colors of your team (in the above image, the Doctor deals damage when you match red gems, Vastra when you match yellow).  If you have more than one team member of the same color, all of them will attack when that color is matched.  In my current game, I have four team members who match on blue gems.  This means that when I match blue gems, I can deal some pretty devastating attacks, but have had to sacrifice two gem colors, green and red in order to have that many.  Matching three or more pink gems increases your health.

Your character do not die individually, but only as a team, which is a great benefit.  I have always been frustrated with turn-based RPG’s where I have had to waste valuable attack turns reviving “dead” characters.  Another benefit is that your gems do not have to be adjacent in order for you to match them.  You can pick a gem up and move it anywhere on the board for up to five seconds before dropping it again.

You can also customize the look of your gems.  The default is in the image above.  Two of my favorites are DALEK, which, of course, has pictures of Daleks on them, and THE SILENT, which are covered with hash marks.

All in all, this is a terrific and addictive game.  I am still working on the first level, but still have to play the game daily or feel as though I’m missing my fix. Doctor Who: Legacy is available for portable devices through your app store, as well as Facebook.
