Why Did My Thunderbird Menu Bar Go Away?

In an effort to streamline the program and remove clutter in the menus, Mozilla decided to hide the main file menu bar by default in its latest edition of Thunderbird, and if you’ve installed an update lately that design change has now been forced on you whether you wanted it or not.

Although the menu options are hidden, they aren’t gone for good. You can still access them by clicking the menu button (the icon of three flat horizontal black bars) in the upper-right corner of the screen, which will bring up all your standard menu features like “File” and so on.

If you don’t want to go through at extra step though and would prefer to return to your previous way of accessing the menu, simply tap the “Alt” key at any time while Thunderbird is open. This keyboard shortcut forces the menu options back on the top of the screen, but this is a temporary solution, as the menus will be gone again the next time you open up Thunderbird.

To get the “File” menu back permanently where it used to be, right-click anywhere on the empty bar at the top of the screen, such as next to the “Quick Filter” button or “Search” box.

Showing The Menu Bar

Click the option labeled “Menu Bar” and a check mark will appear next to the option. From then on the menu will appear at the top as it used to every time you open Thunderbird.
