Help! My Yahoo! Email Doesn’t Work On The iPad!

Sandra Blattberg from New York writes:

After upgrading my iPad, I can no longer receive my Yahoo e-mails.

Major software updates like iOS 7 can occasionally play havoc with some of your existing settings for email on the iPad. However, it is easy to remedy. Simply follow the instructions below:

1. Ensure you know the correct password for your Yahoo! email account. If you are not 100% sure what that is, it is always a good idea to test it to make sure that the password you are thinking of is indeed the one you use for your Yahoo! email account. So, open Safari and navigate to http://mail.yahoo.com and log in to your account. If you are already logged in, log out and try to log back in again to ensure that your password works.

2. Next, find the Settings app on your iPad and go to Settings > Mail, Contacts and Calendars to see your existing email accounts.

Mail, Contacts and Calendars

3. Tap on the Yahoo! account to access the mail settings, and then tap Delete Account. It sounds scary, but you are only removing the account from the iPad. None of your emails, contacts, or calendar events will be erased when you delete the account, they will just be temporarily removed from the iPad.

Delete Yahoo Mail Account

4. A warning will pop-up, informing you that deleting the account will remove all existing emails, contacts and calendars from the iPad. As stated above, your data is safe, so go ahead and tap Delete to confirm.

Confirm Email Delete

5. Next, tap Add Account, and then tap Yahoo!

Add Yahoo Account

6. In the pop-up box, enter your full name, email address (including the @yahoo.com ending), and your password. By default, the description will read Yahoo! so you can change that if you like, or just leave it as it is. The description only serves to better identify the email account if you happen to have several different email accounts on the device. Then tap Next in the top right-hand corner to confirm your settings.

Add Yahoo Account Details

7. On the next screen, choose which Yahoo! services you would like to sync to the iPad. If you only need email, feel free to slide the other switches to the left in order to deselect the other options. Click Save in the top right-hand corner to save your preferences.

Save Yahoo Email Settings

8. Now you can navigate to the Mail app to find your latest emails. It may take a minute or two for them to sync, but they should appear almost right away.

  1. I have outlook on my ipad and i also lost my e-mail account on it after the update. I did what you stated and then it brings up my mail except I can not access it. When I checked on my settings the one for e-mail is not bright like the rest of the settings.
When I first was able to get in I could not delete mail, now I can’t even get into any of the mail. Any other solutions?

  2. Shirley, you should be able to go to Settings, Mail, Contacts and Calendars and then tap on your Outlook account, then delete it as above.

If for whatever reason that is not possible, make sure that you do not have disabled the ability to remove mail accounts in Settings > Restrictions > Accounts. It should say Allow Changes. Otherwise you will not be able to make changes to an email account.

  3. I pad will not allow to add yahoo email account since recent upgrade. 6. Hi
I was having a problem suddenly not able to access yahoo mail on ipad, so I followed these directions and deleted the account. But when I tried to add a yahoo account again, it says that yahoo account has already been added? Even though I just deleted it! So now it seems like I no longer can access yahoo mail on my iPad anymore unless I do it through the Safari browser. Why the hell did I delete it? What do I do now?

  7. Great, I followed these directions and worked fine .
Just follow the directions step by step and you will have it going in no time .

  10. I’m in same boat at chris Bosch. After update to iOS 8.1.3 yahoo mail wouldn’t update in ipad. I’ve tried deleting the account numerous times, according to Sandra’s instructions, I’ve tried opening yahoo mail in safari browser and removing all emails from inbox to a newly created ‘temp inbox’, as advised on another blog. I’m at a complete loss! Still no email in mailbox.

  17. Trying to receive email on a ipad air but the server is not working Ive deleted the account, put back it in, I even changed my yahoo password Nothing works

  18. Deleted the account, restored it, no change. Tried again by deleting the (yahoo) account, THEN RESTARTED THE IPAD, and restored the account. No change. The Mail app doesn’t open. Sits there on empty screen, then the screen turns black and reverts to the home screen.

  19. simular thing is happening with my mini. Yahoo mail comes in and disappears before I can open it. Then shows No Mail. I’ve tried removing acct and checked all the settings I could find. No help. Taking it to Apple store tomorrow.

  20. I’m having the same problem they keep saying updated yesterday for my yahoo account and I did all of the above steps as well nothing helped solve the problem my Gmail and my cloud email work fine it’s just the Yahoo that won’t update that started yesterday at 6 PM and it still hasn’t resolved

  21. Lost all my emails in my in box, Apple said should think about a new iPad! Did a reset, twice put yahoo in NOT bt, BINGO. Thank you above for such good advice,

  22. I have tried everything everyone suggested here. Nothing has worked. Yahoo mail stopped updating on Tuesday. After reloading yahoo account three times I now have an empty email box and it still says last updated Tuesday. All other email accounts on my iPad work fine. Very frustrating.

  23. Same problem with my ipad mini, yahoo account stopped downloading abt 3 days ago.Deleted and re-installed the account, still no mails.Other accounts, including gmail, and another yahoo mail are fine, just this one particular account.Which justhappensto be my primary account!I have even emtiedmy archives, trash, sent boxes…to no avail.

  24. thank you sir/madam for your excellent step by step instructions
I am scared of even touching the settings but I followed wht you said and it worked like a dream
    Thanks again from athens Greece

  25. My iPad is doing the same thing. I have no emails on it. stop a couple days ago out of no where. very frustrating and I have also tried everything. nothing. deleted my email account. then went back in and added it. turned off my iPad and back on. Need help.

  26. I too have tried everything that was suggested and now i have a blank inbox with the last update being 3 days ago…..

  27. Same issues as above. Email stopped coming sometime 3/13. Have deleted and reinstalled account several times. Have rooted iPad several times. Nothing shows up!

  28. Same thing as most already listed, tried reboots, delete yahoo account many times, still says updated last Friday, same day as upgrade to IOS 8. Can anybody help, Apple doesn’t seem to want to help.

  29. i have the same problem as many others listed here. March 16th, Yahoo email stopped coming to ipad, but still ok on iPhone. Followed instructions. Didn’t work. Deleted email and reinstalled. Didn’t work. System reboot tried, didn’t work. Email account working on main PC. I installed iOS update earlier today! Bingo.
    Gmail is working ok. Help!

  30. I found a workaround to the “updated yesterday” but I’m not sure everyone will like it. But it works on the iPhone 5 and iPad mini iOS 8.2. I have yahoo for personal and Gmail for biz so this isn’t great. But it works. Download yahoo mail app from App Store and install. In notifications (in settings) keep alert on(this gives you the # email on the icon). In settings mail center/calendar center , slide off green slide on mail. leave the calendar and notes, etc on green. Now you’ll have your mail app from iPhone and your yahoo app. It will work. After a lot of time on my iPad and iPhone, both saying the yahoo acct had updated at different past times, this now works.

  31. What Lea says is right, but, the problem with the Yahoo Mail app is that it constantly polls the Yahoo mail servers, and drains battery life. Also, there is no way in the Yahoo app to delete an email and mark it as read as you can with left swiping in iPhone mail app.

  32. Cannot see any incoming yahoo mails on ipad or iphone. Only can see the number of emails growing, but not downloading any email.
Had tried reinstall account, changed password, reboot, and nothing worked.

  33. I did what Jonathan advised. Yahoo mail comes up but has no content under the folder names.
Is it possible that I have to configure somehow the incoming mail server or does yahoo use the same SMTP server for both in and out mail?

  34. Same issue with me. I deleted info and then reconnected but it still hasn’t updated since Sunday 3/29/15. Email coming in on my iPhone but not my iPad. Thinking something changed on Apple’s side I just can’t find what.

  35. OK so what I did was install the Yahoo mail app. Then my emails downloaded again. Then I deleted the Yahoo mail app because I didn’t need it. Seems to work fine now.
