How to Fix No Sound on an iPad

How do you get sound back on your iPad? I have an iPad 3 and all of a sudden the sound is gone even with the volume button all the way up. Cannot hear videos etc….
Thank you in advance. Brenda.

No sound on your iPad (or iPhone) is a common complaint from many iOS users at some point in time. However, the good news is that unless your iPad has a hardware fault, it is often very quick to remedy. Here are some things to try.

1. The Mute Switch – Most iPads have a switch on the side of the device, just above the volume control. This default behavior of this switch is to mute your sound. Sometimes it can be turned on by accident when taking the iPad in and out of a case, or simply by being caught on something. Try sliding the mute switch in the opposite direction to see if sound is restored. Often, this is the root cause of no sound on an iPad so it is always worth trying this first.

2. Control Center – Although the side switch will mute your audio, it can be used for another function. So, to double check that your volume is not muted, launch the Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of your screen. Look for a bell with a line through it. It will be one of six icons in the middle of the Control Center. If the bell is white, tap on it to turn it black (the off position), then try launching an app with sound to see if your audio has returned.

3. Close Apps – Are you missing sound in one of your favorite apps, or on all apps that you try? If the problem is limited to one or two apps, try closing them and restarting them to see if it makes any difference. The proper way to close an app is to double-click the home button (or swipe up on the screen with four fingers) to reveal the multi-tasking menu. Swipe to the left until you find the app that is giving you problems, then swipe the large thumbnail upwards to close the app. When you are done, press the home button, or swipe back to your home screen and tap on it. Test the sound on the app you just closed by launching it again to see if you are having the same problems.

4. Hard Reset – If none of the above methods work, try initiating a hard reset. You will not lose any data, apps or anything else, but you will clear any bugs or apps that may be affecting your iPad’s performance. To perform a hard reset, press and hold the power button and the home button simultaneously. Keep them held down for about 20 seconds, or until you see the Apple logo appear on your device, then release the buttons. When the iPad restarts, test your sound.

If you are still having problems with the sound on your iPad, then it is likely a hardware issue that you might need Apple to take a look at. Often a trip to your local Apple Store will be the best place to start a more in-depth diagnosis of your problems, but 9 times out of 10, you should be able to fix the issue using the tricks listed here.
