Vicki, I will guess that you mean file and not program. You can’t really designate a program to be opened by another program. When I say file, I’m talking about things like documents and images.
There are two ways you can change how a file opens. You can right-click on the file and select Open With.

Then choose the program you wish to open the file with.

If you want a particular type of file to always open with a certain program, Choose default programs.

Then select the program you want to open that type of file.

I’ve always wondered about this too. I’m also wondering how to restore the file a computer tech person made to back up my important files when I had to reset my entire Windows system. I’ve always Google this kind of stuff but have yet to find an answer and I also am not a techie person at all.
I have gone into control panel, select default programs, associate a file type, (ex jpeg) then change program, open with dialogue box comes up, if the program is not listed, i scroll down to Other programs and click the browse and find the program but it will not add it or make any change how do you fix this.
Same as setting up Default programs in control panel if the program you want is not listed under programs how do you add it
Any help would be appreciated
