Help! No E-mail Associated With Scan & Fax

We frequently hear from people experiencing versions of the problem Ray is having e-mailing images and documents. Fortunately, the fix is pretty quick.

Ray writes:   When I try to use my fax and scan feature running 8.1 the feature won.t let me email photos or attachments. The message I get .”There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or if one is already installed create an association in the default programs control panel “. How do I do this? I have three email programs on this computer.

When you say that you have three e-mail programs on your computer, do you mean three e-mail clients? Because to create an association, you need an e-mail client installed on your computer. A client is a program like Outlook, the Windows Mail app or Thunderbird that is installed on the computer. It downloads copies of your e-mail onto your computer that you view in an inbox.  You can’t use Gmail or Outlook.com or any online mail  e-mail service for this function.

But if you have an e-mail client installed on your PC, here’s how to create the association. Open your search charm and search for Default Programs. Then click on the result. Here, I’ll use the default Mail app that’s already installed in Windows 8.

The Default Programs window will open.

Off to the left is a list of programs to choose from.

Find the e-mail client you wish to use, such as Mail or Outlook and click on it.

Click on “Set as Default.”

Now, whenever you perform a task that calls for sending an e-mail, the Mail app will open. Now you will need to have set up the e-mail client of your choice with your e-mail provider so it can send and receive e-mail from your account.  Click here to learn how to set up the Mail app in Windows 8.1.
