Junior High Student Arrested For Changing Teacher’s Computer Background

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with a felony after he used an administrative password to access and change the laptop background of a teacher he didn’t like.

The Pasco County, Florida Sheriff’s Office say the boy had access to to private files and could have altered grades or stolen a look at test questions, but the boy says all he did was change the laptop background.

This isn’t the first time the teen has been in trouble. He was suspended from school for doing the same thing last year.  Right now, he’s facing a 3rd degree felony and is in the process of transferring to a different school.

XP Still Ahead Of Windows 8

A full year after the end of security support for Windows XP, that operating system can still be found on 18% of computers accessing the Internet according to NetMarketShare.  While Windows 8 and 8.1 combined are on about 14% of computers. Window Vista can still be found on around 2% of computers.

Windows 7 is still the leader of the pack, found on nearly 57% of computers. All Mac Operating systems combined make up about 5% of systems while Linux-based systems account for just under 1.5% of users.  With a free upgrade to Windows 10 available for users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 sometime late this summer or early fall, you’ll probably see a faster adoption rate for that operating system.

    1. It means that it’s waiting to be approved. Comments go through an approval process to make sure Spam isn’t posted.

  1. Reluctantly, I will. I do not like losing the ability to operate a computer. I have enough “windows” on my iPhone.

  2. I have windows XP which I will continue to use and feel that if Microsoft really cared about it’s customers instead of making poor folk buy new machines they would fix XP after all they are supposed to be such geniuses this should be a piece of cake, I guess the profits they make are more important than their customers. By the way If I leave my house unlocked it’s a dare for a criminal to enter and see if he can out run a .44 SPL.

  3. I have a laptop and a notebook and I plan on upgrading the laptop at first. Then I will see what to do next. I am getting a little excited about trying a new program. I don’t have a lot of issues with 8.1. I have several friends who use it and it doesn’t seem all that bad.

  4. Bored, smart kids…goes to show the pathetic condition of not only our school system, but parental oversight also. We hear “children are our most precious possession”, and then fail on every level to protect, and teach them. We repeat history every single day of our lives. And some teachers shouldn’t be teaching. But, God bless’em, those that are meant to teach are overwhelmed by class size, lack of resources, etc. Pray for our nation, yes, but PRAY FOR OUR CHILDREN FIRST!

    1. I agree with your comment wholeheartedly, but not sure why it is on THIS comment stream? God Bless you!

      1. Donna Hatton…It’s regarding the boy who hacked his teachers computer…in this newsletter.

  5. Still use XP on offline machines. For the rest I got off the Windows rollercoaster and put Linux Mint on all online machines. Very happy with that.

  6. Old dog learning new tricks. My computer history started with Dell and W/98 in 2000. Replaced with a Dell w/XP in 2004. Thought I’d upgrade several times but all I seemed to read was nothing positive about 7, 8 or 8.1 to make the investment. Going on a feeling, W/10 will most likely be time for me to upgrade. Oh, of course, with another Dell. Meanwhile, fingers crossed, my 11 year old machine will last a few more months.

  7. I use Windows 7 on my main pc but have Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview on my laptop and 2nd pc. I dont see a lot of difference between that and Windows 10 but dont use those mc’s as much as my main one

  8. I would MUCH rather have Windows 7 but to get the computer I needed~it had Windows 10 on it. Completely useless for my needs.

    1. Are you sure it had Windows 10? Windows 10 is only available not in a Technical pre-relase program that you sign up for.

  9. I have a Desktop, Notebook & Tablet. Will try windows 10 first on desktop, but from Worldstart’s reviews so far, will probably upgrade all 3.

  10. Yes, I will definitely D/L the latest ver. I currently have 7, although I enjoy it, MS will be offering 10 for free, so you got to go with the latest ver so you can be up to speed in the future.

  11. If this is not the first time he has done this then he should learn the hard way that we all have to live within boundries. He just does not have the right to invade his teacher’s space.

  12. Should charge the teacher with a felony for negligence for letting his password be retrieved. Better results with some positive counseling for the youngster and turning a disaster into a future for the creative lad.

  13. IT IS APPARENT THIS YOUNG MAN HAS A COMPUTER TALENT. IT WOULD GREAT IF THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE COULD STEER HIS TALENTS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND GIVE HIS TALENTS A CHANCE TO GROW AND SOME DAY , HE WILL MATURE AND HAVE SOME SMARTS TO CARRY HIM FORWARD IN LIFE. DO NOT SMOTHER HIS ABILITIES WITH THE CHARGES OF FELONY.

  14. I have Windows 7. I will hang on to it as long as possible. After that I will do away with the computer. I’m tired of trying to keep up with the newer computers.

    I LOVED XP!

  15. As a former teacher, it is time the young man develops some respect for authority. I know he has talent, but no discipline. He needs that to go forward in life. Part of this country’s problem is rules don’t apply to everyone. My best students only became successful when they played by the rules, not because they were brilliant: the other brilliant ones became bag boys at the local grocery stores. And of course, their parents made excuses for them. Sorry have to side with Judge Judy- NO excuses.

  16. windows seems to be leaving out many drivers for programms in xp and 7 also 8.1 has no disk, seems fast is the go(for phones )32 and 64 should be kept in all opp systems, win 10 should have full basics for all but option to load quick set if you want. If this does not happen in 10, it leaves big hole for some one else to fill.Tried 8.1 am now back on 7 would love to be on xp.

  17. As a retired teacher I believe this young man needs to have some punishment for his actions. This time it was changing a background to what. Next time it
could be he decides to help out a friend or impress someone by changing a grade stealing a test and its answers. As to how harsh a penalty I would want to know what he changed the background to. Also he does need to have his skills directed to helping people and not messing with potentially harmful acts.

  18. What’s the advantage over 8.1 More apps? I don’t use 8.1 as I don’t like the idea you have to have a Microsoft sign in and they can keep tabs on you OR am I being totally stupid ?

  19. I am not an attorney, but it seems that the teacher could file a civil suit for invasion of privacy or libel. However, I don’t understand how he can be charged with a felony for things he “could have done, but didn’t”. I could have robbed the bank, but I didn’t.

  20. Having purchased an Asus Transformer Book in the last few months that came with Windows 8.1, I must say I am not enamored of 8.1! I have no use for the Metro function, nor any of the “Apps” that came with it! I simply need a small notebook system for writing and handling email. Furthermore, I have no interest in using “cloud” storage, where hackers can access everything. I backup everything I do to two separate flash drives, and to CD’s. There is no need for my data to be anywhere else, because I have no use for a tablet, and do not use a smartphone.

So, yes, I will try the upgrade to Win 10, and provided it works well, and doesn’t jam the computer, screw with my data, isn’t easily hacked, and doesn’t require cloud storage, I’ll use it. But I remain leery of any OS beyond XP, which I still consider the best system MS ever released.

  21. I have 4 computers all running different versions of win7. There was a notice that there is a update coming from MS that will install win10 on your computer when it is ready for install. I dont have any of my computers on auto update as I like to pick the ones I want to have update, but back to would I install win10, I will install it on my test desktop and install the programs that I have on my main computer and see what happens and go from there since all 3 desktop computers are built the same. If I am happy with it then I will install on all. I hate win8 and 8.1 and stuck with win7.

  22. Yes, I will upgrade to 10, but not right away. I’ll let the new OS crash out of the gate for awhile, let the bugs get mostly worked out, then do the upgrade before the free one expires!

  23. Throw the book at this stupid kid, and teach him a lesson. If it isn’t done now, he’ll think he can continue to get away with it. That’s the last thing you need. Discipline builds character and teaches you right from wrong. I hope his parents beat the crap out of him.

  24. I preferred XP to Windows 7 in the early days but now think that Windows 7 was a better product and now Windows 8 (and 8.1) has some improvements as well – the only problem is that some XP programs won’t run on Windows 7 64 bit so I have a couple of laptops running 32-bit okay – also used XPinstall to save copies on new Windows 7 PCs and they run fine (other than taking up memory). So I’m waiting to see what Windows 10 will do.

  25. I have windows 7 on one computer and windows 8.1 classic shell on the other. At 84 I am happy with both and would up grade to 10.Wonder if I can put classic shell on 10 if I don’t like it?

  26. Yes, I plan on updating to Win 10. I’m running Win 8.1.1 and my computer is only 1 1/2 yrs. old. I want to keep it up to date. I have read a lot about it on a Win 10 forum, and there’s still a lot of bugs. Don’t see how their going to have it ready to ship in July. I’m going to wait awhile to see how it goes for others, before I download.

  27. Yes, I plan on downloading Win 10, but I’m going to wait awhile before I do. I want Microsoft to get all the bugs out, before I do a download. I’m running Win8.1.1 now. Looking forward to the download.

  28. Yes, I’m looking forward to Windows 10 when it’s ready for download – anything to get away from Windows 8.1!

  29. I’m with Ed. I’ll shift to Win 10 after it is out of the gate, and before the free switchover time expires.

  30. I have Win 7 on my desktop. I have XP on a laptop – some favorite programs will not transfer to higher platforms. This laptop will NEVER go on line again. A comment above stated they will wait for fallout from WIN 10. Me too.

  31. Not right away, I’ll wait until service pack 1 is out if possible. I run a computer that dual boots ms-dos 6.2 and windows 98se and another computer that dual boots windows 98se and windows xp professional. Some games just don’t like upgrades period. And I have tried VM and compatibility modes, dosbox, scummvm, and others with some victories but not others and just gave into the realm that the force was not with me. So I went this route and the easiest way to play the games that I wanted to play.

  32. I have Windows 8.1 a little over a year now and it took me a good 2 months to figure it all out. This was before Worldstart came out w/their wonderful guide.Since the upgrade will be free, yes, I’ll be there!

  33. I’m a little concerned about some of the bugs in the new Windows 10 but surely this will be fixed before the upgrade. I love my 8.1 now but hated it at first. I still have ME on 1 computer & XP on the other but this is my newest.
