Windows 10 Gets Warm Reception: What Do You Think?
So far, Microsoft’s new Windows 10 operating system is getting a pretty warm reception from Tech writers. Cnet says it “Marks a turnaround moment for Microsoft,” while Yahoo! Tech said that “Microsoft returns to sanity.” and called the OS “coherent.” The Wall Street Journal said, “Windows is actually useful again.” PC Magazine called the release version, “rock solid” and gave a “strong recommendation” for users to upgrade.

I’ve been pretty happy with Windows 10 myself. But what really matters is what do you think? For those of you who have upgraded, what have been your experiences so far? Let us know in the comments.
President Demands Supercomputer Research
President Obama issued an executive order calling for a new initiative on supercomputer research. He wants to create the first exascale computer system (a system capable of performing 1 million trillion floating point operations a second). Since the hardware doesn’t exist to support such a system, this would require a huge investment in overhauling infrastructure. But the White House feels it’s important for the U.S. to take the lead in the development of this system.
This initiative will be a joint operation of the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense and the National Science Foundation. There’s no word yet on whether is will be called SkyNet.
LG Brings Back The Flip Phone
As phones keep getting larger and larger, LG is reversing the trend by introducing a new flip phone that will sell for less that $200. If has physical buttons and only sports a 3 MP camera. However, it does have a touchscreen interface.

There’s also a fast quad-core Snapdragon processor. This phone make look old-school, but his has up-to-date insides. For now the LG Gentle is only available in South Korea.

I installed Windows 10 twice on each of 2 computers. In one case, on my HP laptop, I activated Onedrive in Windows 10 which really messed up security settings in the Documents and Pictures folders. I had to roll back to Windows 7, then restore a backup, and start another install. Note – the rollback to Windows 7 was not perfect, which is why I restored a backup so I would start from a “good” version. Also, stay away from Onedrive in Windows 10. In the other case, on my Dell laptop, Windows 10 was crawling. Again, I rollbacked to Windows 7, then restored a backup, then reinstalled. I cannot say why the second installation seemed to be fine with no deterioration of system performance. All I do know is that I had a problem.
did upgrade install took over 1 hr. after waiting all i get is a black screen. will try to fix.
this sucks as i need this computer for work
I installed Windows 10. On to Dell computers. Both computers were all in one desktops. The first computer I installed it had 12 GB of memory. The installation took about just short of an hour with no problems. Second computer had 8 GB of memory. It took about an hour and 15 minutes to install. The only problem I have found with Windows 10 so far. Is the mail program. The folders didn’t transfer over from my 8.1 in both computers. Nor can you make a folder. Or at least I haven’t figured it out yet.
I have found Edge very slow when I was trying to read the obituaries in our local paper. It loads as scroll and on Chrome and explorer it will load as you scroll where as with Edge it seems to take for ever.
Also very disappointed that we do not have Cortana in New Zealand.
There were a lot of annoying little things that went wrong during the upgrade, like having to sign in, again, to a lot of web sites that I was signed into before the upgrade, as well as having to sign in again to all 3 of my email accounts. I was also unable to sync my other email accounts with Outlook. I imagine it will be fixed fairly soon, or a new version released, but my AdBlock program doesn’t work with Win 10. I have read that others have been able to restore functionality by uninstalling, and reinstalling AdBlock, but that didn’t work for me. I know a lot of sites, yours included, rely on ads for revenue, but, since I NEVER click on them, why should I want to see them? Also not a big fan of the gathering of data and keystrokes by default. I feel that this should be divulged more plainly than in the middle of the tens of thousands of words service agreement. Finally, I don’t see anything that makes me think Win 10 is any better that Win 7, but I never really had any issues with Win 7, either.
I hate windows 10. What used to take one keystroke now takes 2 0r 3 to do the same thing. Seems everything is hidden. I am going back to Windows 7. Why don’t you tell everyone that the can restore the previous operating system they had if they do it within one month of installing Windows 10?
I still have not upgraded. Not because I don’t want to, but because this relatively new computer is evidently still now in the state it needs to be to be able to upgrade.
I have installed Windows 10 on my ancient HP laptop and on my newer HP desktop. Both started as Windows 7. Both events went smoothly; the only interventions I had were to click ‘next’ once or twice and to accept the policies statement. Both gave me a bit of a trouble with accounts. I am in the practice of working most of the time from a general user account, and moving to my Administrator account when I need to work on the system or some programs. It took, I think, a few extra reboots before everything was copacetic. On the laptop I lost my background; on both I lost my user pictures. That’s minor; I fixed these easily.
The new file structure as shown in Windows Explorer is different. I need to study it a bit before I rearrange my files as they currently exist. Under Windows 7, I had all my document files in the Public library so I could access them from either account if needed. They are still accessible to both accounts, but don’t show up in Explorer unless I use the path C:UsersPublicDocuments. My programs (Excel, Word, Adobe Reader) find the files without a hitch; I haven’t tried creating any new files yet, though.
Using Windows 10 (albeit primarily doing things the same way I did in Windows 7) has been a breeze. Problems:
1. When I receive emails (via Gmail on Chrome) that contain attachments of Word documents or Excel workbooks, I can download them without incident — but the files cannot be opened. With Excel, I get the message, “This file is corrupt and cannot be opened.” With Word, I get the message, “Word experienced an error trying to open this file.” [Word then gave several things to try, including a ‘Text Recovery converter’] In both cases, I transferred the same Word and Excel files by copying to a flash drive, and they opened without a problem.
2. When I shut down from my Administrator account, my next boot brings me to the choice window; but if I shut down from my General User account, the next boot automatically logs me into my General User account automatically, without letting me select an account. I can get to my Administrator account by signing out from the General user account; I then get the window where I can choose an account. (I don’t need my Administrator account often, so this is only a minor annoyance.
It took about five hours to install. I have had no problems…….yet.
I installed Windows 10 two days ago on my ASUS laptop. The download does take some time, but you are warned of that at the beginning.
So far, I love Windows 10. It appears so much more efficient– (So Far), than 8.1. Has everything important in the windows button with easier access than 8.1. I love Cortana (and she loves me). This appears to be a great improvement from 8.1.
So far, so good. Just some minor learning required to locate things. I have not found anything not to work as it did previously. I was able to VPN into my office with the CISCO application that our company uses.
I regret installing Win 10. If I could I would go back to Win 7. I don’t like having to sign in every time I start up my computer. I also don’t like edge being the default browser. I set Foxfire as my default browser but edge keeps starting up. Restoring to Win 7 doesn’t work. My restore points only go back for two days. So much for having 30 days to change your mind. And some games I had on Win 7 don’t work on Win 10. I don’t see where 10 is any better than 7, just different not better.
Very simple Bobby, Just type Go back to Windows 7 in the search box and click on the results. You’ll see an option to go back. But I’d consider giving it week or two. You have month to go back. And remember, even if you go back, you can choose to upgrade again at a later date.
Did not have any problems with download. However, am not happy with aol desktop 9.7. Every time I attempt to paste something to an email, aol shuts down and restarts. Lose everything and have to start all over. I really like the ease of doing just about anything with 9.7, but this is becoming a real sore point with me. Any suggestions anyone? (Besides cancelling aol subscription.)
Did the upgrade yesterday. It hung up on “configure settings”, waited for 2 hours to see if anything would happen, nothing. Turned computer off waited a few seconds and turned it back on. The upgrade resumed from that spot. So far had no problem playing with it and kind of like it better than windows 8.1
Ifirst got the upgrade ok on my HP 8.1 Computer . When I tried to upgrade, it screwed up my computer. Had to use the restore mode, To go back in time. My second attempt worked , but it took 4.5 hrs. to complete. It seems that it’s more windows 7 than 8. The only thing I don’t like is the black and white start up and shut down screens. Time will tell on 10….
took 5 times for the download finally got it done/had trouble with message 80072EE2/kept going to update windows finally worked/takes about 24 hours to download/after all of this about takes about 1 hour to finish/works good alittle differentbut nice/hope 2 enjoy
So far ok. It took me two days to get my printer to work and to get my Kindle app to let me read my books or even see them. Time will tell if I like it as much as I did 8 1.
I installed Win 10 on the very first day. I am trying it on an Acer Aspire that just meets the minimum processor requirements. Compared to Win7, this operating system uses more resources (CPU and memory). It seems to work alright, but when it does updates, the computer comes to a complete halt. And since updates are downloaded at any time the computer desires, it sometimes becomes useless at inconvenient times. The download and install took almost 4 hours on my machine, but went smoothly. Based on my evaluation so far, I probably will not install it on my other two HP Win7 machines. I may change my mind, but I have little use for the new features. And the Edge browser is still not as good as Chrome.
I have upgraded Surface Pro 3 and HP desktop know problems noticed so far. Still waiting for notification to do a Dell laptop. These are personal computers. What little I have used them after upgrade it was like going home it felt go and more or less familiar. Like going home after college and your parents remodel the house. Its the same just fresher. It seems to boot faster and more responsive.
Installed Windows 10 on my Gateway all-in-one about a week ago. Although I do like the operating system and the new features, I have had numerous issues, some of which I have not been able to resolve. I use another email account than Outlook and have not been able to get outgoing mail to function, even after consulting my carrier’s tech support. My speakers will not work…no sound at all…so no Cortana and no video clips or movies! Sadly, I did not do a backup after I downloaded Windows 8.1 so I cannot go back. Disappointed.
You can go back to 8.1 easily by typing Go back to 8.1 in your search box and clicking on the result and selecting “go back to 8.1” But I have some other troubleshooting suggestions first. If you were using another e-mail client besides the Windows Mail app previously, that’s still on your PC, so you can check it or download Windows live mail and see if it works any better than the mail app. If you have the option for IMAP, you might try that instead of POP account.
As for the issue with your sound card, I strongly suggest contacting Microsoft’s tech support for Windows 10. I’ve had to talk to them both in person and via chat about Windows 10 and found the courteous and helpful. When you follow this link, just click on Services and Apps. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus#
I spoke with a Microsoft technician who was fixing my laptop, to remove the windows 10 update before it installed.
He told me that Dell and HP computers aren’t ready for the upgrade yet. You need to go to the Dell or HP site to find out if your particular PC is ready for it. My new Dell is but my old Dell isn’t.
Avoid a lot of headaches and check out the manufacturer of your device, don’t only rely on the system check that is on the windows 10 icon on your taskbar, it showed my old Dell was ok for the upgrade, but Dell said the opposite.
Interesting – so far, it seems more ‘issues’ than those ‘tickled pink’ with it… We jumped from XP to 8.1 (and did NOT like 8.1 from the start) and a few have made comments that 10 is more like 7 than anything else… For us, that means we are going to have to totally re-learn a new format for doing things again… OH JOY!!! I do have to agree that trying to get everything on the ‘same page’ as far as operating systems go, is a good move by Microsoft.
About W10 browser. I don’t like that it doesn’t have a file menu. If it does, I sure haven’t found it yet. Will use Firefox until they put it on top where it should be. Can’t even find where to print the page???
After downloading Windows10 I had a conflict with Internet Explorer and the new EDGE.Also, could not download on another laptop. Kept getting an error but couldn’t find a solution to problem at Microsoft.
Really like what I see. Still have a learning curve to get into all it can do and what I shouldn’t do. Moved from Win 7 and all of the files I need moved with it.
Haven’t had a chance to check out much in Win 10 yet, but right off I don’t care for Edge. I want a Toolbar on top. I hate Google and now Edge is like Google no tool bar at top. I’m going to try to get my IE 11 back for my default browser.
So far so good. The download went smoothly. There was a 15 minute time frame where my screen went black. It was worrisome, but a screen popped up and everything was fine ( they need a message of some kind to warn you this was ok). I like the layout. Its all new to me and am still learning where things are. I had trouble with adobe flash but then it started working. The tips to fix it were useless, but I got lucky but don’t know why. Its probably my imagination, but my screen resolution seems sharper. All in all I am glad I switched.
William, you’re lucky. I didn’t want to download, but it was automatically downloading. Then my screen went black and never came back. That was 6 days ago.
After attempting to download Win 10, I gave up. Kept getting the Blue Window saying “Windows 10 is working on it”. My computer “experts” suggested I wait a month and then load it. That this was a problem numerous people are haveing. Is it because my computer is an HP?
Windows 10 I love it.Have had windows since windows 95 and this one is the one to keep!!! Installation was a piece of cake ,But I am keeping fox fire for my browser.
Tried to install on a computer that seemed to meet all requirements for installing Win 10.
After about 20% into the install it reported ‘this computer cannot run Win 10’ and then said it would ‘clean up’.
Then the computer seemed back to normal except it would freeze when tryingto shutdown.
From that point on no matter what ‘fix’ I tired I could not fix the shutdown problem.
I then set the computer back to before the win 10 install attempt.
After getting “Failed to Load” error four times over three days, I called Dell Support who sent me to Microsoft Support who solved whatever problem there was (Microsoft was professional and helpful). Windows10 loaded without any problems (although it took awhile to load and install) and has worked well with n problems so far. Generally, I like 10 much better than 8.1 but I am still not a tile man. I especially like Cortana which works better than I expected though there will need to be much improvement in time to come. Some things they have messed up, i.e.: placing shortcuts on the desk top and making view up-date history hard to find.
My W10 download experience went almost perfect on our laptop and desk computers and had one problem – no audio on our desk computer (Dell). Sent e-mail to Microsoft regarding problem and audio problem was fixed when I started the computer the following morning. Much faster system and of course it will take time to find and use the operating differences. As always one can expect a learning curve on any new system.
My HP laptop died 6 days ago and has not come back. I “only” wanted to Reserve Windows 10. Clicked the icon, got a message saying it was reserved and would take days to weeks before I’d be notified. A few minutes later, there was a popup saying it was reserved and it was downloading — which I did not want to do yet. There was no message asking me when I wanted to to it — such as MS claims. Then my system died — black screen, couldn’t power back. I have to take it to Geek Squad and pay $200 to hopefully restore it to 8.1 factory settings.
One problem I had was daily zigsaw puzzle wouldn’t open and wouldn’t even go to the website. After restarting that problem disappeared but just a short wile ago the calculator wouldn’t open. I did the restart again and it’s working. Not sure why these problems occurred. I do like the new layout and I’m not sure about Cortana (I did think it was the problem with zigzone. I especially like Candy Crush right there 🙂
ZigZone has actually been down. I’ve seen several complaints about that.
I’m adding another comment – I can’t find my screensaver I had on 7 and don’t know how to get my pictures to be the screen saver. Haven’t figured that out yet. All 10 does is give one picture no way to pick several or at least I haven’t figured it out yet.
It is a new learning curve, especially with Edge. First thing, my old HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 quit working. I had to do a complete reinstallation after removing the prior one, for this printer to get recognized. Thankfully, it now works with my Gateway. Win 10, at this point, is just more annoying, after finally figuring out Win 8.1
Does anyone know if there have been any problems with Lenovo laptops with downloads or anything else?
Be advised, the scammers have already started. Got a call this morning from “Windows Support” on our fax line. The rather “Indian” sounding representative wanted to know if I have installed Win 10 yet and wondered if I had any problems, and offered his assistance. I thanked him for his interest, and blew a whistle into the phone, after which I told him to stop with this scam crap and leave us the hell alone.
Opted for Windows 10 on 30 July. Went back to 8.1 after three days. Had some problems with Edge (does not accept Java, so can not display some pages), the IE was freezing often enough. Also not very informative as to how to add favorites in Edge. Shall wait until a more advanced version comes up in few weeks or months. After all. I have 12 months to do so.
I have my copy reserved and so far haven’t been notified that it has been downloaded, however my sister did download Windows 10 and she hates it. She says her printer won’t work, she can’t get into her bank on her computer anymore and she is trying to figure out how to get back to 8.1 without having to pay for it. I asked her about a system restore if that might work but to check with someone before trying to do something like that. Right now I am afraid to install it for fear that I might have the same problems. I have an HP and haven’t check with them to see if mine is one of the ones that it will install on. Microsoft did check my system and said it is ready for it so I am waiting.
I have upgraded to windows 10. So far I like it. I especially like having the weather app knowing at all times what the current temperature is by glancing at that app. Otherwise I doubt I will ever buy any apps.
I did notice that several of my old games no longer will load that I played when I had windows 7.
A word to others who have not upgraded, it will take about 2 hour or 3 hours to download and install windows 10.
It took me 30 hours to down load then it said my pc was incompatible .so it restored it back to where it was & that took all night .
I don’t know who to believe. I just read in WorldStart Tips & Comments the good and the issues with Windows 10. On the Internet it is the same. Some really like it and some are having problems with it. I understand that there are at least 6 major issues that must be resolved. Hopefully I can wait until Microsoft puts out Service Pack1. By then perhaps some of the major issues will be resolved.
Marlene: I’d imagine everyone is telling the truth. Some have zero issues and some have plenty.
The transition from 7 to 8.1 was very easy, just different. Then when I upgraded to 10, my computer slowed down to about XP performance. The numbers lock has to be reset every time I start my computer. I noticed that one reply says that Dell and HP aren’t ready for the upgrade yet. Guess what, I’ve got an HP Laptop (8 months old w/8.1 from factory) that I too checked for compatability prior to upgrading. Eveything “supposedly” checked out fine. Guess I’ll live with it and have to be patient for a bit. Hopefully, it’ll get worked out soon.
The change itself to 10 as an OS so far is now big deal. It’s just seems to be a combination of 7 and 10. I was really impressed with the speed of 8.1 and assume that 10 should be the same. Otherwise it would be a step backward, which I can’t believe would be intentional on Microsoft’s part. All we can do is “hang in there” and keep reading the WS tips!
So far so good. I was expecting a very long time for it to download but actually total time was a bit less than an hour. Everything went smoothly and this is so easy to work with. Cortana is great. I absolutely hated 8.1 to the pint I almost gave up using the laptop and went to the desktop again with Win 7. Now I once again use the laptop and think this is a winner of a system. I decided to take the jump after reading all that you had published and said I nwill give it a try. Happy I did – easy to navigate and hey – I am 80.
Some parts of it I love and then there are other parts of it that are causing me trouble. I use AOL 9.7. When I use AOL through the mail icon of Windows 10 I don’t have all of my folders or all of my email. There is no deleted or old folders. So if you delete an email by accident there is no way to go find it and make it unread again. Then I have many folders in AOL that I had organized for different needs. Well, in Windows 10 if I click on the AOL email I can see these folders but nothing is in them. When Microsoft fixes the few bugs it has I think it will be an awesome operating system.
Installed windows 10, now my computer does nothing but restart after getting an error message. Cannot get to my desktop to try and find out what the problem is.
this Windows 10 upgrade……is the slowest thing, operating system, web browser invention that Microsoft has come to serve us….the Edge thing is very unresponsive and takes a long time to load.
I am very disappointed with this ?????? development.
H.Rojas
i can’t report, because I can’t get it. My optional updates refuse to install, and KB3035583 with the W10 reservation is among them. Attempts at installation get error 8020003F. Can you help? Thanks.
Just upgraded to Windows 10. The program I rely on the MOST is Microsoft Money Sunset (have used Money for many, man, many years and now it is BROKE. It says it needs IE V6. Windows 10 no longer has IE. Have to rever back to Windows 7….
Microsoft does indeed include Internet Explorer in Windows 10. Internet Explorer 6 would be a 14 year old operating system and not safe to use at all. In fact, most websites have dropped support for it. What version of MicroSoft Money are you using? Anything from version 12 – which is 11 years old – on up, should work with Windows 10.
Installation on my windows 7 pc went smoothly, only problem is, I can’t get to the Internet. Seems like I am missing a driver for local area connecting adapter. It isn’t missing on my windows 7 don’t know why it would be missing on windows 10. Put a call in to Microsoft but nothing back from them after 4 hours. Will not install on my 8.1 pc until this is fixed.
I’m waiting 1 week for Microsoft to call me.
