Hi, Bob.  Thanks for the great question.

If I understand your question correctly, there are two possibilities.

You  didn’t say if you’re using a mouse or a touchpad.  If you’re using a mouse, the first thing to do will be to try another mouse.  It’s always possible that your device is simply failing.  If the new mouse works, problem solved.

If your new mouse doesn’t work, or if you’re using a touchpad, then I would recommend downloading a new driver for your pointer.  Frankly, I think that’s your problem anyway.  I had a problem after I installed Windows 10 where my Internet was dropping every time that I accessed certain websites.  At first I didn’t think anything of it, because my internet is pretty awful where I live.  But then I realized that as I was struggling to keep my PC online, I was streaming an X-Files episode through Hulu on my Playstation.  So there was nothing wrong with the connection (for once).  So I updated my wireless adapter driver, and that solved the problem.  So I think that’s what’s happening with you… you just need to update your driver.  If you’re going to upgrade to Windows 10, I would recommend waiting until after you’ve done that to update the driver or you may wind up doing it twice.

Here’s the easiest way to do that.

Open the search charm by moving your mouse to the upper or lower right corner of your screen and click on SEARCH.


Type DEVICE MANAGER into the search box and click on it when it comes up.

If you’ve already upgraded to Windows 10, click on the restored START button at the lower left, and then SETTINGS.


In the search box at the upper right, type DEVICE MANAGER.  On my screen, it gives me the options of device manager or update device drivers.  Both of these take you to the same place.  They’ll both open your device manager.  On the screen, click on MICE AND OTHER POINTING DEVICES.  Find your device driver, right-click and click on UPDATE DRIVER SOFTWARE.




At this point, it will either tell you that your software is up-to-date, or it will walk you through the process of downloading and installing your new software.  I think that it will get new software for you.  You may want to restart your computer, just to make sure that the install completes correctly.  This should resolve your problem.
