Windows 10: Upgrading Was Easy

Lyn has nothing but good things to say about the upgrade to Windows 10. “I had been putting off going to Win 10 because I hate what it did to our computer at home. Will not go into that. And yesterday it asked me again if I was ready to upgrade and I click on “later”. However, it instantly began town loading win 10. So, I sat and accepted the change. After a few minutes my screen went black. I waited and waited because that damn thing say “DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR PC”. So I was afraid to touch it. I waited for about 3 hours to a black screen and I am not a known for being patient. I,finally, got mad and turned it off and back on; “low and Behold” Win 10 was up and running. IT IS BEAUTIFUL. JUST liked my Win 7 and nothing is gone or lost. I’m pleasantly pleased.”

It’s nice to hear from someone who had a pleasant experience with their upgrade. My own upgrade was pretty much like that. No so much as a file folder moved on my desktop and I was able to get right back to work.  For those of you who have upgraded, how was your experience? Smooth sailing or rough waters? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Downloaded WIN10 then it just vanished what do I do to finish it off?
There should be a way to find it so I can use it as it used almost all my internet for the month to download. Help would be appreciated.
    Ken Shaw.

  2. Desktop went just fine, no problems but my year old HP Pavilion laptop will not upgrade. Tried at least 4 times. It will sit there forever…like 15 hours or more. I gave up for now.

  3. I tried windows 10 on 3 of my computers one was completely successful the other two I reverted back to widows 7. I had so many glitches that caused irritating frustrations. It removed my virus scanner, it cut off my internet several times. My computer repairer thinks widows 10 is fantastic it is keeping him in work. That is not to say I will never use it but I will reserve my judgement after I am confident using it on my successful lap top and windows fix their problems. Then I am a senior and not able to comprehend as well as the young folk

  4. I upgraded to System 10 the first week it was available and have nothing but GOOD things to say about this new System. Thank You Microsoft.

  5. I had a dmooth upgrade. No problems. Unfortunately my pc got slower and slower. They advised me to upgrade my pc which I did. It is working perfectly. Yesterday I had a Windows 10 upgrade and now my control panel’s view changed to the Windows 7 view. Why is that?

  6. Updated the desktop within first two weeks. It has just come back from the repairers as Windows 10 had become corrupted – no tiles, Action centre did not work.
I updated the laptop a couple of weeks later and have had no troubles with it.

  7. I got upgraded a long time back. It’s ok but there is a problem with downloads which need to be erased. How do you performed it? Because it is not done directly as in win7

  8. I did the upgrade back in September. Like a lot of people, I was hesitant to do so. Nothing but praise for Windows 10 but downloading to the newest build isnt functioning!

  9. Upgraded to 10 on Aug 8, worked fine. Did update Aug 12, Nothing has worked right since.
Contacted Microsoft, tech worked by remote for 6 hrs finally told me to get a win 7 disk from HP and reinstall 7. HP says they do not have 7 disks and have gone to win8.1 so I’m stuck with a computer that doesn’t work right. I’m waiting until july and either microsoft fixes it, or I will sue them for a computer that does work.

  10. Everything slowed down and I kept getting warnings that I had to update my drivers. But Windows 10 kept telling me they were updated automatically. Drivers Support still told me many drivers were out of date. I eventually had to pay to get the drivers updated and my videos wouldn’t play. But now everything seems to be going OK. I’ve go my fingers crossed.

  11. Had major problem accessing download and finally had to get professional help. Apparently, my computer was loaded with all kinds of malware in spite of Io it and free McAfee provided by AOL. Later found that McAfee version from AOL o ly provided minimal virus protection. Do not know why I obit software was also inadequate after having worked well for .any years.

  12. Camtasia Studio does not work properly under Win 10.
Powerdesk Pro does not work at all.
I have lost 2 programs I use all the time 🙁
Unfortunately I went on vacation after doing the upgrade and so only realised that I had problems when it was too late to reverse the changes.

  13. I have tried SIX times, using the invitation, manual, make a DVD, after between 3-1/2 to 6 hours each time it popped up stating it could not load.
I have posted on the MS site and there is more that 50 pages of problems
that people want help with. This set-up needs a pre-program to check out
a machine. I have Win7 pro, plenty of HD space a 2.9 speed chip. The two
codes I get are not listed anywhere. 0x8009000F and 0x90002, I’m not
impressed, I’m angry. The download did change a lot of files to cabs, I did a restore on my “C” drive. (I bought a copy of your Win 10 book)

  14. My transition to Windows 10 was smooth and nice. I did not like the screen looking like a tablet and some of the squares that populated my desktop were totally useless to me. But after a few weeks, my pc started slowing down, until it turned into a snail. Now, the programs that I used to open all the time don’t work anymore and I am not even able to burn a photo DVD. My internal DVD drive (D)as well as my external DVD drive (E) were converted to CD players when they work but when I try to burn a blank DVD it tells me that there is no disk in the drive. So now I have a useless big tablet sitting on my desk. I don’t like Windows 10.

  15. I was able to upgrade to windows 10 easily and system has been working ok.
However, I have been facing one problem quite frequently. In that when I go to power option to shutdown, the normal menu of sleep ,shutdown or restart does not show up. I have to use short cut menu to shutdown
. On next start I get a caption to say that critical error has occurred and I need to sign out. This has happened at least ten times in a month. Anyadvice please?

  16. The upgrade went reasonably well if somewhat slowly. Now I have found trouble printing and it will not recognise word files but will print from note pad.
When I was running XP (many years ago) It was me that controlled what happened now far too often I feel this system and my computer are conspiring against me. For instance I get blocked with a ‘ping’ when typing emails and the letter does not appear PING PING PING so end up using note pad and copy /paste to get it into where it is required. That is just one of the many ‘tricks’ this (lovely) thing plays on me. Don’t we just LOVE our computers. 🙁

  17. I help people with computer problems and have done several Windows 10 upgrades. All has gone well with upgrades with one exception. On several different systems after the install Microsoft office was no longer registered and I had to to phone support and re-register using the original key code. After this office worked well. Don’t understand why when doing a Windows update this happens.

  18. When from Win7 to 10 with no problem, BUT!!! Since I’ve been on Win10 things started to disappear. icons on the main screen such as Mail was the first then ability to have different “normal” functions stopped working like clicking off FLASH DRIVES. Hole thing really sucks

  19. Last June/July I created a mailbox for any heading I ran into that contained VER10 in title. Auto Tagged it, sent to V10 box. Looked @ few files at later dates. . . By Sep. mails became much less. I looked at a couple mails and their was less complaining about V10. . . Seemed to be more “positive praise” for product. Never see V10’s in any Komando mails anymore. At times there were 2 to 5 daily. Collected 185 mails. Nov. 12th. was last mail. My son, a professional programmer, announced to me that it’s time for “V10” install. He started it.. then left. >>52 minutes later nothing is happening!<< I rebooted system . . . logged into system…. VOILA!!!!! I haven't had one "hick-up" out of "V10" . . .

  20. My w10 update went fine, however it immediately broke my printer and within 6 days it deleted everything on my hard disk. So I had to pull out my Dell disks reformat and then download and install w7, SP1, and five years worth of updates. Not going the update route anymore and this machine will use w7 until it’s not supported anymore or until I can buy a new PC with factory installed w10.

  21. I had a terrible experience when I downloaded 10. Nothing worked right. I called Microsoft & got no help. Scheduled for a tech to call me. No call. I was ready to pay a tech to get my windows 7 back when there was an upgrade. I downloaded the upgrade, which took 40 minutes, now everything seems to be fine.

  22. I upgraded both mine and my husbands computer and we both like it and he complains a lot about anything computer related. I love it.

  23. I upgraded to Windows 10 on a HP Pavilion 500 that was factory loaded with Window 8 and updated to Windows 8.1 and IE ver. 11. I had no issues when updating to 8.1. I also had no issues with the original upgrade to Windows 10 except for having to locate some of my programs that I had already on the machine.
After a Windows update a few weeks ago, I lost the use of the Windows icon, Cortana, and the New Notification icons. I also lost the use of the left mouse button to access some programs. Some programs such as Notepad which I you most often does not work the same. Also, I am having trouble with my emails which is on Yahoo.
This looked fine when I first was upgraded but has gone downhill ever since.

  24. My windows 10 upgrade took the better part of the day. But after that it ran good, then I lost my start menu, search, and notification area. PCHA helped me to resolve the issue and now things are running great.

  25. The major issue I had when upgrading to Windows 10 was when it came to the virus scanner, Norton, being on or off. Had all kinds of problems trying to do the upgrade with Norton on, once it was turned off things seemed to go smooth. Seriously thinking about doing a fresh install of everything now though because it seems like things are starting to slow down for no reason and I’m having issues with Edge from time to time

  26. I downloaded Windows 10 at the get go. No problems. Everything came with it. All my programs are fine. Still getting used to it. I don’t like Cortana. I noticed my computer is much, much slower though.

  27. I have tried upgrading my laptop now for 3 days. It says it was downloading and then I accepted its install, however, it never has installed and I am still seeing the old Windows 7 face.

  28. Everything went fine except, some of my programs didn’t show up, they were listed in a file folder the computer made and put on the desktop. Thankfully I had run a Belarc Advisory scan and had all my numbers and was able to put them back on with out any problems. Have no problems now. I have never set up Cortana so don’t know if that would slow this PC down or not. (Started as Vista, went to Windows 7 and now Windows 10).

  29. It has been nice as for my laptop (it has taken a little longer time) as for my desktop. I recommend to take it late in the night when there is free of any task.

  30. Upgrade went quickly. BUT, once done almost nothing actually works. Clicking an icon to open an app simply blanks out the icon and NOTHING happens. My computer whiz son was able to tie in remotely, and apparently the apps are somehow blocked from access to the exe files. What the hell?

  31. I have upgraded on a fairly new laptop -sent to me with Win8 and I upgraded to 10. I think I could like the upgrade EXCEPT on Outlook mail ( which I don’t like)I keep getting that Limited Access to internet. Mail will work for 3 days and then not again for 3 weeks! I have tried various things to no avail. Suggestions??

  32. The same thing happened with me. The Windows 10 upgrade just launched itself when I clicked later. Then when I tried to delay the install it only gave me choice of the next 5 days! I couldn’t get rid of it. I shut down and restarted and the Windows prompt came right back. I felt like I had no choice so I backed up everything, isolated a day and upgraded. Win 10 installed in less than and hour That went pretty smoothly until I discovered I had no internet connection. Without the internet connection I could not get any help. I could not Google solutions nor contact Microsoft for information. I spent 6 hours trying to figure out different things that could be wrong. I finally contacted Comcast since they are my internet providers but after wasting my time with book reading rep I got was escalated to a supervisor that informed me that because I owned my own modem they cold not help me. He did however give me a telephone number to call the manufacturer of my Asus computer. Asus had me delete a file and reboot. When Win 10 came back up it selected the proper file automatically. Everything seems to be working fine now but I would never have figured this out for myself. The Worldstart’s Ultimate Guide to WIN 10 gave me no clue how to address this issue. I spent most of my time reading this manual but it didn’t help with my internet connection issue.

  33. I never should of upgraded!! It worked for a while but I have no edge browser.no notification window and I have to right click on start and when I go to apps it takes me to uninstall, everything is messed up and with no help I don’t know what to do…I use google so I can still go online….Very disappointed and don’t know what to do..:(

  34. I have a refurbished Dell laptop with Win 7. I have been trying to get Win 10 loaded for a week. It downloads and says it’s installing and then bombs and gives an error code that doesn’t match anything. You know, Win 7 works pretty well. Maybe I should stick with it.

  35. Mine took hours and then said it had a problem and would set my computer back to Windows 7. I tried twice with the same result. Perhaps I should turn off my Comodo internet security. I see that Allan was successful after turning off Norton. My wife’s laptop upgraded from 8.1 easily, but she lost all her pictures. We should have backed them up first.

  36. I was going to upgrade but after reading these remarks, I have enough problems keeping my Windows 8.1 working right and the very thought of going through some of these nightmares is something I could not handle.

  37. I had good luck downloading Windows 10. Took about two hours. Had trouble getting on internet at first and also my HP Officejet 6500 printer would not work but got on the HP web site and upgraded the driver and all is working great now. Now having fun learning all the things about Windows 10. Keeps life interesting at my old age of 84.

  38. I bought my computer at Best Buy and I signed up with Geek Squad. They took care of the Windows 10 upgrade for me and they said it went off without a hitch. I like the new operating system, no problems so far.

  39. A major problem of mine is Windows10 email contacts will open as in Windows7; it is frustrating having to type in the first letter in order to get some of the names that match. The same applies to MS Outlook. Also, when sending email Bcc, the recipients’ names will not show in my own sent items. Also my Favorites did not sync, so I have a folder on my desktop to to access them. I haven’t had problems like this since Win 3.1 back in the 80’s.
I do enjoy your news letter very much! Thanks, Alfred

  40. Win 10 will not download on my win7, 64 bit machine because the latest version of .NET Framework won’t download. This is a problem for many people when I go online for a solution. Have spent hours trying everything I can find to no avail. I don’t have original Win7 disk but made a repair disk. That doesn’t fix problem either.

  41. I upgraded from 8.1 on my desktop and Windows 7 on my laptop with no problems other than taking a long time to complete… The Edge browser is a great disappointment: still unable to use add-ons! I have to switch to IE (an option inside Edge. in order to use my RoboForm password manager.

  42. i have a desktop and a laptop computer. The desktop computer has vista. I could upgrade to 7 but unlike some I like vista. The laptop had 7 so I did the upgrade to win 10. The upgrade went ok except that it removed the setting for brightness on the display. Now the display is too bright and there isn’t any setting to change it that works. FN key and the up and down keys are supposed to adjust the brightness but they no longer do. I went into settings and I only fond one place for brightness and it does nothing. It isn’t in the location where it used to be. Even worse than that as soon as the home page loads on chrome and some other browsers it goes to the yahoo search page. I checked the settings did virus scans with avast,Malwarebytes, and Spybot. It found a couple of things and moved them to the virus vault but it still does the same thing. It recommended downloading windows 8 start menu which allows me to set up the start menu more like Vista but sometimes it doesn’t load so I get the big icons on the desktop like windows 8.Since it went to yahoo search It can’t load web pages part of the time. I have a device that allows me to connect any hard drive through the usb on the computer so I pulled the hard drive out and plugged it into the desktop computer. Then I did a virus scan with the desktop computer. It found a virus and fixed it. It still acts the same way after i put the hard drive back in. I tried restore but there is only one restore point and it was created after The problems started. I created restore disks when I got the computer. I am ready to try restoring the computer to win 7 and stay with it if I can. I heard that Microsoft discontinued my licence for win 7 when I updated to 10 so I don’t know if It would work. Also win 10 loads much slower. All my programs that were on win 7 are there with win 10 but it is such a mess that I only try to use it when I need frustration in my life.

  43. well i was afraid at first but finaly i upgrate it on 27t of november and it has is gone smoothly. no problems at all. i like it and it is working fine. i’m very happy.

  44. I happy to see my experience was wonderful. All the items from my Win 7 transferred with out any problems and I agree as far as I can see I lost nothing.Even my Quicken Program transferred with no problem.
Absolutely love it and the increase in speed was very noticeable
