Amelia has a question about closing a Yahoo account. She writes: “I would like to close my Yahoo account; they are too liberal for me. I have tried to locate an unsubscribe or cancel on the site but have not been able to find one. Also, if I cancel Yahoo I am afraid I will no longer be able to use YouTube.”
First of all, Yahoo isn’t affiliated with YouTube. YouTube is part of Google. While you need a Gmail address in order to post to YouTube, you don’t need any type of account in particular to just watch YouTube. Yahoo, is associated with Flickr photo accounts, you don’t want to delete the account if you still plan to use that service.
Click here to visit the Terminate Your Account page.
If you aren’t already signed in, you’ll need to give your e-mail address and password. The page will give you a list of reasons why you might want to stay with Yahoo and warn you that you’ll lose contents of HotJobs, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Address Book, Yahoo! Briefcase, and GeoCities. It will also terminate any paid services with Yahoo and you aren’t guaranteed any type of refund. You can also check to see what type of information that Yahoo! may retain about you even after the account is closed.
You’ll then need to re-enter your password.
And type in a CAPTCHA code. There’s also an option for an audio code.
Then confirm that you want to terminate the account.
Generally your account will be deactivated within around 90 days.
Make sure you’ve saved and important messages somewhere else and that you also update any accounts or e-mail subscriptions that come to that address.
Also, before dumping an service because you aren’t happy with the political views of the folks in charge, remember that you may not be able to find an alternative service that is any more in line with your way of thinking. You can end up going through a lot of hassle to dump an account and start a new one, only to find yourself using a service with company views that you like less than Yahoo’s.
Do make sure you already have your alternative e-mail address up and running before closing your Yahoo account.
