Why Can’t I Burn A DVD in Windows 10?

A reader has a question about burning a DVD in Windows 10.  “Trying to burn a DVD using Windows 10 DVD Maker or Windows Live Movie Maker. But nothing works. Has Windows made these program unusable or do they have something else?”

Are you trying to simply burn files to a disc or do you want to burn a movie that will play on a DVD player on your TV?

If you want to burn files in formats that typically play on PCs or online like MPEG-4, you should be all right. But if you want to burn videos that play on DVD players, you’ll need to purchase special software. Neither Windows 8 nor Windows 10 supports burning movies for DVD players.

  1. I cannot burn anything. I have purchased several burning programs, but will do nothing. What kind of software do I need?? I running Win. 8.1.. Thanks for your response.

  2. Cynthia, I haven’t looked but I suspect there are still free applications available for Windows that will burn movie etc. DVDs, since Microsoft took the ones out they used to provide.I would suggest folks look some other places besides just the Windows store.

  3. My laptop came with 8.1 and I upgraded to Win 10. Cyberlink Media Suite came with it. You can use that to burn movies in Win 10.
