New Laptop Has Windows 8 – Can I Upgrade to 8.1?

Chris’s new laptop came with Windows 8. He writes: “My laptop was delivered with Windows 8.
Can I upgrade to Windows 8.1 for free? And if so, how shall I proceed. Thanks a lot for the kind help.”

It’s important for you to update ASAP, since Microsoft no longer offers security support for Windows 8.

Upgrading is free and fairly easy, but it is time-consuming. Click here for an article that explains how to get the free Windows 8.1 upgrade from the Windows Store.

Once that’s installed, you’ll want to run all of your Windows updates to get the Windows 8.1.1 upgrade as well. Frankly, if I were you, I’d just go on ahead and update to Windows 10 and not even bother learning 8.1.  After you run all of your Windows 8.1 updates, you should get that little nag from Microsoft suggesting you upgrade.

  1. Hi Cynthia !
Thanks for your reply and your suggestion to upgrade directly to Win 10.
My problem is that I’m not found of Win 10 after I learned that they got rid of so many programs which were so much useful (burn DVD, watch photos and more). And we don’t even know if it’s possible to download them being compatible with Win 10.
Would be grateful for your advice.
    Kind regards,
    Chris
