A reader recently asked how to delete messages from the Android version of the Facebook Messenger app. I thought this would be a good opportunity to explain the various ways you can manage your messages.

Message threads in messenger are called Conversations. You have the option of deleting an entire conversation or just one exchange within the conversation.

If the issue is that you don’t want to be disturbed by notifications to a group conversation, you can also choose to turn off notifications or leave the conversation instead of deleting the message. You may want to refer to it later.

Let’s take a look at how to do it.

If you just want to delete a particular exchange, open Messenger and then tap on the conversation that contains the message.

If you’re like me and have long-going discussions with the same person, there could be 100s of exchanges within one conversation. To delete just one message, press and hold the message.

Then choose Delete from the menu that pops up. This also where you can forward or copy the text from the message.

To delete an entire conversation with someone. Open messenger, find the conversation and press and hold the chat head until you see a menu.

Then tap Delete. You can also choose to Archive the conversation, Turn off notifications, report the conversation as Spam or Block that person.

If you find yourself stuck in a group conversation, you can always choose to delete it or turn off notifications.  But you also have one additional option. Hit your phone’s menu button. This window should open.

Hit the menu button in the top right.

A drop-down menu will appear. Just tap Leave group to exit the conversation.
