Google Hopes To Embarrass Smartphone Makers Into Pushing Upgrades
Fragmentation is often cited as the biggest problem with Android smartphones and tablets. Unlike Apple devices, where updates to the operating system are applied quickly and pretty much universally, Android devices are split between different versions of the Android OS.
Part of the reason is that device makers often don’t makes updates to the OS available to customers for months, if at all.
Now Google is thinking about ranking smartphone manufacturers according to how up-to-date they are and releasing that information to the public in hopes of embarrassing them into being more aggressive about updates. According to recent numbers, only 7.5% of devices are running the latest version of Android.
Robots Could Be Coming To Your Drive Through
The former CEO of McDonald’s says more and more restaurants will be replacing workers with robots and automation. In an interview, Ed Rensi said, “”I was at the National Restaurant Show yesterday and if you look at the robotic devices that are coming into the restaurant industry – it’s cheaper to buy a $35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who’s inefficient making $15 an hour bagging French fries.”
Restaurants have also discovered that smart-phone savvy younger people are content to order and pay for food using their smartphones and just pick them up. Among the new generation of automated food include Robofusion frozen yogurt machines that allow customers to order cones and sundaes without every interacting with a human.
Google Wins Android Lawsuit
The folks at Google are breathing a huge sigh of relief after a jury cleared them of charges they stole code from the Java platform to create Android.
The jurors agreed with Google’s claim that they’d used that part of the code under the fair use doctrine. Oracle was asking for $9 billion in damages. Oracle will be appealing the judgment.

On automation . I am not for it put due to the demand from entry level
jobs to have to pay $ 15.00 an hour I do not blame fast food restaurants
from going to this , the will now put more younger people from working and
getting employment.
Hey Cynthia, ‘Robots Could Be Coming To Your Drive Through’; I’ve got to tell you, 50yrs ago my collage ‘Automation’ class was chartered to design a ‘fast food’ fully contained facility which fit in a small shipping container. It was easily assembled with off the shelf robotics from that time. The fully functioning ATM was the only problem. The class even suggested the facility could be moved from place to place using ‘parallel parking spaces’… The project was abandoned as the client opted to provide conventional ‘entry level’ jobs in lieu of the automation.
One thing robot don’t buy anything.
I think we need the jobs for so many people. Where will these people work if more and more things are automated?
With the government requiring businesses to pay $15.00 an hour for unskilled labor, it will force most of these businesses to find ways to find other means for labor. Using automation is just the beging to replace unskilled labor.
Robots may work for some things, but when they screw up, a business can lose a great many customers. Restraunts can do a lot with robots, including going out of business,
when the robots malfunction or break down. Not to mention if a robot dumps hot coffee or the customers order in a customers lap. And my “Pet peeve”, Failure of voice recognition software!!!!!!!!!! I hate voice prompts while trying to get to a live person, to discuss a problem. Biggest offenders for trying to contact a live person at a health insurance company, and some banks. A robot in my opinion has certain functions but almost nothing can replace a live person with a reasonable amount of reasoning power. Exception being college educated Idiots.
Yes, young people are savvy enough to use cellphones for ordering fast food but how will they buy said cellphones without the disappearing jobs? Scary times
Not everyone has smart phones to pay robots with. I don’t and don’t want one. I’m satisfied with a flip phone for my needs. Just want the phone not internet. I have desktop for my internet. No need to text message and have internet.
Many of these automatic systems accept cash as well as debit and credit cards. Much like the self-checkout at the supermarket.
If restaurants start using robots it will bring more jobs for skilled labors who they will need to service robots.
I agree, automation will lead to more higher-skilled jobs and a lot fewer low-skill jobs. I also imagine that high-skill workers will find themselves also assigned tasks like mopping the floors and cleaning the tables in addition to the IT duties of maintaining the automation.
Is everyone to become a skilled repairman? That’s ridiculous!
People are communicating less and less with other people as it is. If I go into a store I expect to be greeted by a person, not a robot. That is, if I don’t get hit by a drone on the way.
Business should not have to pay $15.00 for unskilled jobs when skilled jobs don’t. Robots will only hurt the economy.Less jobs means less money spent. Nobody wins. I will not support a business that has robots over real people.
There will be a lot more crime because our poor will not be able to work. I do not think it is a great idea. The Rich get richer
lost job’s will lead to a United States of the unemployed and then what will happen to the economy, inflation and eventual bankruptcy of the good ole U.S. of A. if no one has jobs, there won’t be money for housing, food. Will the Government accept us all for welfare? I doubt it!!!!
I am NOT a fan of much Automation and I do not believe automation will lead to more higher skilled jobs as automation can be produced by robots at less costs and not too far away would be installed by robots, with automation there will be no need for cleaners, skilled people, doctors, surgeons or others as more smart devices with AI capability is produced. As more and more people lose paid work who will then buy the products being produced. Have a good look around the day is not too far away.
How many robots are going to notice when they go moldy? Or rats in the business serving the food. No bot is going to stamp it out.
. Nothing like a food poisoning lawsuit to shut this operation down for good.
If unskilled labor is getting $15 and skilled jobs don’t, then there has to be a shake up of business practices to fix that situation.
