Slow Down (Or Speed Up) YouTube Videos

I don’t know about you, but sometimes when I’m listening to an instructional video on YouTube, it’s all just too fast to pick up. You have to keep stopping and pulling the bar back to listen to things again and again. But there’s a way to slow down a YouTube Video to get a better look (or listen) at what’s happening.

Here’s how to do it.  Click on the Settings gear at the bottom right of the video.

Then select Speed from the menu that pops up.

Select .5 for half speed or .25 for quarter speed.

You can also choose to speed up videos if you prefer.

Then hit the Play button.

That slow setting will stay with you for the length of you online session, even if you switch to another video. It will reset to normal when you shut down the browser. To switch back to normal speed, hit the Settings icon again and choose speed. Then select Normal.

  1. Wow Cynthia, amazing tip. Both my wife and I constantly go to YouTube for instructions on sewing or various repairs around the house. We end up having to replay sections just to understand how to complete our tasks. Keep up the good work. Luc and Claudette Legault

  2. I use this for the opposite reason. Speakers on many videos speak too slowly and I speed them up to 1.5 or even 2 to get through the video faster. You can still understand them and you can get through the video faster. This especially works if there is no narration but the action can be comprehended no matter how fast the video is going.

  3. Thank you, Cynthia, for that great and very helpful tip! Sometimes, when I try to follow tutor-videos, I like to write comments down without having to go back and forth to catch all of the instructions. Keep up the good work!
