Why Am I Getting Ads In Yahoo Mail?

This reader question is a good jumping-off point to talk about an important point for new Windows 10 users:  “How do I stop advertisements from coming up in Yahoo mail. I did not have this in Windows 7 before upgradeing to 10. It is very annoying.”

Windows 10 doesn’t change anything about your Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Outlook.com mail or any other email that you access via a browser interface. If something is different, I suspect that you may have switched browsers without meaning to. The browser you were using before you upgraded may have had an ad-blocking extension in place.

If you’re accessing your mail using the Edge browser, this extension is not installed, so the pop-ups aren’t being blocked.  Here’s what the icon to open Edge looks like.

Try opening up the browser you were using before you upgraded to Windows 10. If you were using Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox, they are all still there on your PC.  Just type the name of the browser in the search box and click on the result.

  1. The way you do not get ads in Yahoo email generally speaking is if you are a plus subscriber which I have been for more than 20 years – $19.95 a year buys you no ads plus a few extras. Well worth it. If it is an ad blocker there is no guarantee those will work with all sites and sites are actively trying to avoid them. So there is an inherent and continual conflict there.

  2. Is Win 10 reverting to DOS?

ALL your reply’s today, require typing text strings into a “search box”, this works if you know what to type.

Why do we have to “search” for every command?

Does MS publish a master list of search terms?

What happened to win 10’s GUI?

  3. The exact issue is that the first line of messages received is a (sponsored) email advertisement..with a picture attached, no less! I want to get rid of it also. This just started occurring about a week ago. It is bad enough receiving unwanted emails, but to have one pop up with a picture is unnerving and you cannot just delete it. I can live with the rest of the email ads, and I do not want to pay to have them removed. I am not certain if it is not in some way unlawful as this ad is appearing in messages addressed to me by a supposed(?) law second party. These Yahoo sponsored ad are interfering with my private mails.
