Welcome to Picturing United States History! This site believes that visual materials play an integral role in education and offers online essays, lectures, and reflective classroom lessons to help teachers incorporate visual elements into their teaching.

When you arrive at the site, you’ll find three categories to explore: Essays,  Lectures, and My Favorite Image.

Beneath each category heading there is a paragraph of text that explains what you’ll find in each category.

My favorite of the three categories is My Favorite Image where scholars reflect on images – be they paintings, photos, cartoons, or even sculptures! I highly recommend checking it out.

If you’re looking for visual materials for a particular subject, you can use the search field to look for it. For example, if you’re looking for materials about the Civil War, you’d type in Civil War in the search box and click the magnifying glass. It will search for any materials that match and load the results. When the results load you’ll find all kinds of items like cartoons, photos, and even presentations. To view more scroll down to the bottom of the page and click  Older Entries.

This is a fascinating resource for historical materials! I hope you’ll check it out today!
