Why Does My Laptop Shut Down?

A reader wants help with a laptop that keeps shutting down.  “My laptop will only stay on for 30 mins. can you help?”

It’s hard to diagnose an issue via email, but my guess is that heat is the culprit. Your laptop is probably getting overheated after a few minutes of use and shutting itself off for safety. Once it cools down, you can boot it up again. It’s possible that your fan has stopped working. Sometimes using a cooling fan stand can help, but I would advise you to have a trusted computer tech check out your laptop.

You don’t say if your laptop is plugged in or running on battery power. If it shuts down after 30 minutes running on battery power, there’s a possibility that the issue is the battery. Though, you should get a low-battery warning first.

  1. I agree it may be a heat issue, but before taking to a tech, the user should consider how they use it. If they literally place it on their lap, or some other soft surface such as a bed, they may be blocking the vents that have to be kept unobstructed. If that is the case, the cooling fan stand may (as suggested) may be necessary.

  2. I agree with Les. Had the problem with a laptop I used on the kitchen table. I was setting it on a placemat. The problem stopped when I just set it on the bare table top.
