Deleted Outlook Contacts Are Still Showing Up

Every had this issue happen while using Outlook?  You delete someone as a contact, but they keep showing up as a suggestion when you’re typing an address in the To: line of an email.

Outlook keeps a nickname list that is generated automatically when you address an email. Those nicknames may linger on to autocomplete addresses even after you get rid of a contact.

To remove just a single name, open Outlook and start a new email message. Start typing the name that keeps popping. Then hover the mouse over it without selecting it. Hover the mouse over it without actually selecting the name. You’ll see an X.

Just click that X to delete.

The next time you start typing, you won’t see that name as an option.

You can take it a step further and get rid of all the suggestions if you prefer.  Microsoft can fix the problem automatically with a wizard.

For Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2008 R2 you can click here and then scroll down and hit the Download button to Download the Easy Fix

Or choose to fix it Yourself by Clicking File and then Options in Outlook.

Choose Mail. Then scroll down to the Send messages section and choose Empty Auto-Complete List. Then choose OK when you’re finished.

Or you can empty it manually. Click the File tab and the top of the page and choose Options.

When the Options window opens, select Mail and scroll down to Send messages. Click on the Empty Auto-Complete button and then confirm the choice. Then Click OK to exit.

  1. Doesn’t work. I have Win 10, upgraded from Win 7, and use Hotmail (which displays as Outlook). There is no such feature to empty an auto-complete list. Sure wish there was, though.

  2. i have a weird problem where a contact i deleted from the deleted folder long ago after clearing all cache and deleting all emails exchanged with this person after going through all your steps.. where the contact still shows up (it was duplicated in the search people box for some reason), but it’s only 1 this time. i’ve had no luck completely removing it. not sure what else i can do. im using the outlook client..
