American Variety Stage

Welcome to a Library of Congress American Memory feature! This site is all about the American Variety Stage – Vaudeville and Popular Entertainment 1870-1920.

On the main page, you’ll find the featured categories: Houdini, Theater Playbills and Programs, Sound Recordings, Motion Pictures, English Playscripts, and Yiddish Playscripts.

Beneath that, you’ll find information about the exhibit, search options, and instructions on how-to view images and videos.

I started with the Houdini section, and learned more about him. One of the cool items from that section is this advertisement offering folks $100 if they could escape from all the cuffs he had and could escape from himself.

Go check it out for yourself and learn more about the American Variety Stage from 1870-1920!
