Password recovery without a Microsoft account

In the past, if you used Windows with a local account instead of a Microsoft account, you had better not lose your password. Microsoft offered several password recovery options for those with Windows accounts, but local users had a problem. (You can click here to learn about how a local account works.)

Fortunately, now Windows 10 offers those same options for those who prefer to use a local account. Start by typing Sign-in options in your search box and clicking on the results.

Or click on the Settings icon. Then choose Accounts followed by Sign-in options.

Scroll down to Password. Click on Update local security questions. You will only see this option if you’re logged in with a local account.

You’ll then be able to add three security questions that can help you get back into your PC if you ever lose the password. Once you’ve chosen them, click on Finish.
