OpenFarm is a successfully backed Kickstarter initiative to create a database of farming and gardening information that is free to use. That means you’ll be getting in right on the ground level of it being started and can help it flourish and grow.
When you arrive at the site, you’ll be greeted by a search field that will allow you to search by the keyword of what you want to grow. I’d suggest starting by click About Us at the bottom of the page or this link because there you’ll find great directions on how to use the site, and what it’s purpose is. As well as a three minute video about the project.
I know from the response to other gardening sites I’ve posted that as a readership, you all have a lot of great tips and tricks for growing things. I want to encourage you to share that with the online community by creating growing guides. To do so you’ll need to register for an account, you can do so by clicking the Become a Member button at the top of the page. Fill out the form with your desired display name, create a password, provide and provide and email address. After clicking a confirmation link from your email, you can also share optional information about your location and which measurement system you use or volunteer to lend a hand to the project.
You’ll be automatically signed in, and if you click where it says Hi, Username, a drop down menu appears with the option to Create Guide, or access your User Settings. Creating a Guide is easy, just follow the prompts and the site will walk you through the whole process.
I really hope you’ll jump on the band wagon for this site, the only way community sites like this grow and take off is if people actually use them. I can’t think of a better way to share farming and gardening knowledge. And remember you don’t have to limit yourself to edibles, if you know how to grow an awesome cactus or prefer hydroponic growing you can still make guides!
