Silent Film Era

Welcome to the Museum of the Moving Image’s exhibit on the Silent Film Era. You’ll find over 5,000 artifacts in their collection that date between 1894 to 1931.

When you arrive at the site, I suggest reading the introductory text and then clicking the Read More about the Silent Film Era link. This will give you interesting background information on the museum’s collection holdings. Did you know that 80% of Silent Films are no longer in existence?

The collection contains an amazing array of objects. You’ll find┬áprograms, posters, and lobby cards; costumes; lantern slides; motion picture cameras and projectors, editing equipment, laboratory apparatus, and lighting; scrapbooks, notebooks, and letters; portraits, still photographs, and behind-the-scene images; and oral histories with actors and filmmakers.

On the main page, you’ll also find four featured items from the collection. ┬áTo browse other objects, you’ll want to use the search field at the top of the page.

The fields below it will be set to Browse by Artifact and have the Silent Film collection already selected.

This is an amazing collection. I hope you’ll enjoy checking it out!
