When conversation view is turned on in Gmail, messages in the same email thread are grouped together with all of the responses on the same topic together. You’ll see a number indicating how messages are included in the thread next to the exchange in your inbox.

When you open the message, all of the exchanges are shown.

In lengthy exchanges, some message will be collapsed. You can click on the number to display them.

If, like me, you find conversation view just a little confusing, here’s how to turn it off. Click the gear icon at the top right of the page and choose See all settings.

Under General, scroll down to Conversation View.

Turn Conversation view off.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of Gmail and choose Save changes.

Your messages will now display individually in your inbox.
