Do you know how to pronounce Paczki? I sure didn’t when I first moved to Northwest Ohio. I come from the Appalachian region and we didn’t have these delicious treats there. But in this part of the country, having a Paczki as a Fat Tuesday treat is a tradition.
These Polish donuts are a major event in many cities with large Polish populations. Bakeries advertise that they’re in and TV stations turn up to document the Paczki mania as people grab up what looks like a basic jelly donut but somehow winds up being so much more. This site, explains the history of these confections and the best places to try one. (No matter what they say, I think Wixey Bakery in Toledo makes the best.)
In case you didn’t know, the correct pronunciation of Paczki is “pownch-key.”
