The U.S.-Dakota War of 1862

This site is presented by the Minnesota Historical Society who created it as a resource to help people learn about the history of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, what caused it, and what consequences came out of it.

When you arrive at the site the first thing I suggest you do is click play on the video on the main page. It runs just over three minutes and will introduce you to the topic better than I can here.

After that notice the navigation options to the left of the video that offer you the following categories: Home, Dakota Homeland, Newcomers, Treaties, War, Aftermath, and Today.

Each section offers you a video about the topic covered in that section and then supplemental information for that section. The supplemental information could be text, images, historical documents, maps, or even another video.

Back on the main page, you’ll also find a lot of great information in the section beneath the main menu where you’ll find links to resources, oral traditions, and discussions.

This site offers a great way to look back in history on an event that still has ramifications on today’s world. Go check it out for yourself today!
