This site brings together the Library of Congress holdings of John Avery Lomax’s ethnographic field trip across the Southern United States in a linear narrative. Beginning in Texas in March of 1939, Lomax travelled throughout the south collecting approximately 25 hours of folk music (700 sound recordings) from more than 300 performers. This site contains interactives (sound recordings and data) that may be offensive to visitors, but are provided in their original form from 1939-1940 with related historical context. These recordings span traditional music styles – ballads, blues, children’s songs, cowboy songs, fiddle tunes, field hollers, lullabies, play-party songs, religions dramas, spirituals, and works songs.
Navigation is simple, you just scroll down the page. As you read the narrative you’ll find images, sound clips, and interactive content (like the Visualizing the Journey timeline). Throughout, you’ll find the audio clips highlighted in pink. Click the play button to listen as you go through – they play inline without taking you out of the narrative on the page.
