Unstack my Gmail!

A reader is really annoyed by a Gmail feature.

“In the Gmail email, I do not like the way emails back and forth sort of compress I guess you would say, they stack inside each other and then you can not find emails you want to find. My Daughter in law showed me how to stop this on my iPad with email but I do not know what to change on the Gmail settings to stop this “stacking” is what I call it. I  hope this explains my question, I am not good at descriptions!”

I know exactly what feature you’re talking about.  In Gmail, it’s called conversation view. Other email programs, like Outlook.com, also group emails together like that. It’s meant to be a convenience when you’re corresponding with the same person on a similar topic. But as we all know, most of us don’t stick to one subject on an exchange with people we email frequently.

Here’s how to take care of it. Open your Gmail inbox and click the gear symbol at the upper right.

This menu will open.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of Settings and untick the box next to Conversation view.

  1. What are the symbols at the top of the page in each email for? Specifically the last from the right. While looking for Settings to unstack my email, I clicked on that and lost this email. I checked Trash, Spam and then searched and found it in the “CynMackey” labeled emails.
Come to think of it that symbol looks kinda like an envelope. Now to get it back into the Inbox.
