With a Chromebook, you can do most of the things you do on a PC or Mac but at a lower cost. However, before you make the switch, it is important to consider the pros and cons of giving up your PC or Mac for a Chromebook.
Pros:
1. Affordability: Chromebooks are much cheaper than traditional laptops. You can get a decent Chromebook for under $200, while a PC or Mac can cost upwards of $1000.
2. Simplicity: Chromebooks are designed to be simple and easy to use. They don’t have the same complexity as a PC or Mac, which makes them great for people who just need a basic computer for browsing the internet, checking emails, and doing light work.
3. Portability: Chromebooks are lightweight and easy to carry around. They have long battery life, which makes them great for people who need to work on the go.
Cons:
1. Limited software: Chromebooks are limited in the software they can run. They are designed to work with Google’s suite of apps, which means you won’t be able to run certain programs like Photoshop or Microsoft Office. Though, you can access online versions of those programs with a subscription.
2. Internet-dependent: Chromebooks rely heavily on internet connectivity. If you don’t have a stable internet connection, you won’t be able to do much on your Chromebook. Thoiugh Google is rolling a file sync capability that lets you keep Google Drive files on your device. However, you’ll need a decent-sized hard drive.
3. Limited storage: Most Chromebooks have limited storage space. Most of the storage is done on the cloud, which means you will need to have an internet connection to access your files. There are models like the new Chromebook Plus that have more storage, but that storage comes at a higher price.
4. Limited customization: Chromebooks are limited in terms of customization. You won’t be able to install your own software or make extensive changes to the operating system.
If you are looking for an affordable, simple, and secure computer for basic tasks, a Chromebook may be the perfect choice for you. However, if you need a computer with more power and flexibility, a PC or Mac may be a better option. It all depends on your needs and preferences.

I bought my first Chromebook five years ago after my Windows laptop was hacked and being scrubbed. Since then I upgraded my Windows and my Chromebook because both lost manufacturer support. Each Chromebook was under $200 and has given me security as backups — just in case. For the reasons you stated and my purposes, a Chromebook fits my needs. My only complaint is that you can’t install anything or keep an icon on the desktop.
