How Do I Reformat My eMachines Windows 7 Computer?

My wife has an emachine running windows 7. We would like to reformat it but she has misplaced the system disk. Can we burn a recovery disk to use to reformat it?

Since it’s a rare occurrence that you’d need your reformat disk shortly after buying a new computer, it’s not that uncommon for the CD to get lost in the shuffle as the years pass by. If you no longer have the disc there are still two other methods available to reformat your eMachines computer – maybe.

Unfortunately not all eMachines models include additional options for restoring the system back to factory settings, as the company instead sells replacement recovery discs online for those who have lost the original. To determine if your particular eMachines model includes a built-in option for burning a new recovery disc, open up the “Start” menu and select “All Programs.”

The Start Menu

Open the “eMachines” folder and check to see if there is a program named “Recovery Management” or something similar. If the program is listed, click the icon to bring up the recovery tool. Navigate to the “Backup” tab and click the “Create Factory Default Disc” option at the top of the window.

The Backup Tool

Insert your first blank DVD into drive (depending on your model and which version of Windows you are running, it may take multiple discs to create the backup tool) and select your DVD drive from the drop-down box. Click the “Start” button located at the bottom of the window. The program will then automatically burn all the relevant data to the disc, and prompt you to enter a second DVD if necessary.

Burning A Recovery Disc

Your eMachines computer may not include this backup program, however. If the software is missing, you may still be able to reformat the system manually by accessing a hidden hard drive partition. This separate partition is made at the factory specifically for recovering the computer in the event of serious problems.

Close all of your open programs and select the “Restart” option in the “Start” menu. Wait for the manufacturer logo to appear on the screen as the computer boots up, and tap the “Alt” and “F10” keys at the same time to bring up the hidden system menu. Select the “System Restore” option and then follow the series of prompts to wipe the hard drive and return your computer to factory settings.

If neither the backup tool or recovery partition options are available on your particular eMachines model, you can still order a new recovery disc directly from the manufacturer’s website, which can be done right here.

  1. Dear Ty Arthur, respectfully, I wanted to cast my vote for a thumbs up, or
excellent to this tip, especially the restart Alt + F10. For my own
curiosity, I tried it and was very surprised to what was displayed on my
screen. Thank you so very much for this superb tip (which I hope I never
have to use) but, if I ever do, now I know! One thing I love about
learning new things, is that, “we are never to you to learn.”

With all my best, yours very sincerely and respectfully,

    Ron Lewis

  2. P.S. I just re-looked at the top of the screen where I was able to click
on the Thumbs up! Dah me!

  4. hi, I am a student that is currently in a computer class at my tech school. What you have to do is find a flashdrive with at least 8gb if the CD drive you have is not working properly. You can boot off a flashdrive very easily and i feel it also works much more efficiently to me. you first have to look on google and find a program called “Yumi” and then go to the site and download it. Next you can easilyy find the .ISO file if you just search “Windows 7 ISO” a website should pop up saying they have one. Download the .iso which should take a few minutes and then go to the program Yumi you have just downloaded and select the flashdrive that you currently have plugged in. Make sure you select FAt32 format. Then choose what operating systme you want. It should be located at the very bottopm in a fashion like vista/Win7/Win8 loader. Select that. Then it will ask you to browse to your .iso. Find where you have downloaded it and select it. From there you should be able to press “OK” and then move on to it extracting the iso files to your flashdrive. This part is very crucial. Do not remove your flashdrive as it could corrupt it. Now, when it has finished it will ask you if you want to do it again. Say no. Then reboot your computer and set the boot order to USB drive. Then it should boot right off of it and you should see the windows 7 logo pop up. When it directs you to put in your windows 7 key. you can find one on the internet by just asking google for one. It should be posted on a site. Now it will ask you do you want a custom or regular installation. Choose custom and then it will show your hard drives. As you said windows 7 wont show up your hard drive for some reason. Or the full capacity for that matter. it sghould be there. If it has more then 1 hard drive showing up there should be a thing below it tjhat says “More options” click that and go to delete and format everything till you have 1 left/ You should be good from there./ Select that and press continue. Now let windows 7 install the files on your computer and you should be good to go. Have fun!

  5. I did the recovery process on my emachines PC using the alt and F10 method as I don’t have the disk it has now been going for 20 hours is this normal
