Toolbars like Mixi frequently come as a bundled program when you install other software. While in most instances you should be able to choose not to install the toolbar, in some cases it may be installed whether you want it or not. If you don’t want Mixi showing up on your web browser or changing your settings, you can remove it by disabling the toolbar in your browser and then manually deleting it through your operating system.

In Internet Explorer, tap the “Alt” and “X” keys, or click the cog icon at the upper-right corner of the window, and select the “Manage Add-Ons” option. For those using Firefox, instead tap the keys “Ctrl,” “Shift,” and “A” to bring up the add-ons manager screen.

Managing Add Ons

Navigate to the “Toolbars and Extensions” tab and locate the “Mixi” option in the list, which may be listed as either “MixiDK” or “Mixi.DJ.” Click the toolbar’s name and then click the “Disable” button at the bottom of the window. Click “Close” and then tap “Alt” and “X” again to bring up the settings menu, but this time select “Internet Options” instead. Delete the homepage set by the MixiDK toolbar in the text box and type in the address for whichever homepage you’d like to use instead.

For those using Firefox, instead open the “Extension” tab, select the “Mixi” option, and then click the “Disable” button at the far right side of the window. To change the homepage, click the “Firefox” button and select “Options,” then navigate to the “General” tab and type the homepage you want in the text box.

Toolbars Tab

Before trying to remove the program, first you need to make sure it isn’t still running in the background. Tap the “Ctrl,” “Alt,” and “Delete” keys and then click “Start Task Manager.” Navigate to the “Processes” tab and look for both the “Mixi Toolbar” and “Random.exe” processes. If either process is listed, click its entry and then click the “End Process” button at the bottom of the window.

Ending A Process

Close the task manager window and navigate to the “Control Panel” option in the Windows Start menu. Click the “Uninstall a Program” link underneath the green “Programs” heading.

Uninstall A Program

Scroll through the list of programs and locate the “Mixi,” “Search Protect,” and “TuneUp Utilities” entries, as all three of these programs are associated with the Mixi Toolbar. Click each one and then select the “Uninstall” button at the top of the window.

Selecting Mixi Programs

The Mixi toolbar tends to be a little more resilient than others of its kind however, and it may end up turning itself back on, even after it appears you’ve deleted it. Many of the spyware utilities freely available online with take care of this by automatically finding and deleting the toolbar’s registry entries and hidden files.

If you don’t already have a spyware tool, download and install a program such as Spybot Search and Destroy or Lavasoft Ad-Aware. Click “Check For Problems,” or the equivalent option in your spyware removal tool, to run a full scan.

Running A Spyware Scan

Restart your computer after the scan is finished running. In most cases this should completely remove the toolbar, however if the problem persists, you should uninstall your browser (using the “Uninstall a Program” link as described above) and then re-download it from Mozilla or Internet Explorer.
