In Windows 8.1, is there any program for example that has something like WordPad that is there by default? Unable to help my neighbour.
Larry, is WordPad close enough for you? Because it is right there on Windows 8.1 along with Paint, a Mail App and most of the other familiar features of Windows. People seem to have the notion that Windows 8.1 is vastly different from previous versions of Windows and that’s really not the case when it comes to the included programs.
Your neighbor can simply start typing WordPad from the Metro/Modern screen or search for WordPad in the charms bar and then tap the WordPad Icon to open.

Let’s take a closer look at WordPad while we’re on the subject. For many people, this free program is all the word processor they need.

Open a new document and you’ll see that you have the standard choices for font and font size.

Just click the drop-down menu to change.

There are options to make the text Bold, Italic and Underlined as well as Strikethrough and Subscript and Superscript Options. Plus color options.

You’ll see formatting options for Indentations, Lists & Bullet Points and Line Spacing

Plus your choice of Left, Center, Right and Justified alignment.

You can also insert pictures into your document, add drawing from Paint, add Date & time and insert objects.

It also offers editing options like Find, Replace and Select all.

Compare that interface to the sometimes overwhelming ribbon offered in Word.

WordPad in an excellent tool for most people’s needs. Best of all, it’s already included in Windows 7 & Windows 8 & 8.1.
