Remove Pesky Pop-Ups

Have you ever opened a web page only to find the screen is covered with a prompt that tells you to sign in before you can see the page?  Or maybe there are annoying advertisements that cover up the contents of the page. Yes, we’ve all been there.

Well here is a simple method that you can use to make it disappear from your browser page. The main idea behind this technique is to alter (or in this case, to remove) the HTML coding of the contents that you don’t want to see. Don’t worry, you don’t need to know anything about HTML to make this work.

For example, we want to see an answer to the question : ‘How do I become a data scientist?’ on Quora.com. When we open the page , this is what we get –

quora

Next time you come across such a pop-up like this,  right- click on the content that you want removed. On the drop down menu, choose the option inspect element.

inspectelement

A window will open showing the HTML code for the page. This section is called the web inspector window.

inspectwindow

You’ll notice the highlighted line in the HTML code. Just press the Delete button to erase the code.

You’ll see that the pop-up window has been removed from the page.

Because there may be more than one element blocking your view on a page, you could need to do this for each element to see your. In our example, we also need to remove the white layer that’s obscuring the page. Just like before, we’ll right click on that layer and delete it from the inspector window.

Now, you should be able to view the entire page. Click the x in the upper right of the inspector window to close it.

  1. Thank you Big Time…this had been a problem for a while-will they stay gone and what created them? Thanks for being there for us!

    1. This is just allowing you to edit the page while you view it. The changes aren’t permanent as you don’t have the authority to change the code on someone else’s website.

  2. What do you gain by using this? You usually only have to click the X in the upper right hand corner to get rid of it. Then it’s removed and you can continue.

    1. Actually Jack, not every Window gives you the option to close it without filling out a form or maybe watching a commercial. For ones that can’t just be closed or skipped, this is a good option.

  3. I was really interested in the subject of this article, but the examples of the text to be deleted were blurry and unreadable, not allowing me to see exactly to what you were referring. Therefore, I was unable to use the article as I am not that computer saavy.

  4. I was able to get rid of all the pop ups, but then I could go nowhere. It was a shopping site and there was no access to anything else.

  5. Another way to do this is add adguard adblocker to Chrome. I don’t know if adguard can work on other browsers. Right click on the Adguard icon and left click on block ad on this web site. It will give you an option to make the outline larger or smaller to cover the pop up and push enter. it may be necessary to repeat this more than once. The advantage to using this is that it will usually prevent it from popping up again. If it happens repeat the process and it shouldn’t pop up the next time on the web site.

  6. I may try this next time it happens. Like Jack above I usually click the x, which is sometimes hidden, to close these. If there usn’t an x to close the pop up I use the other x on the tab that closes the whole page. If they insist I sign up see their Co tent then I can do without their content.

  7. Sometimes when I see these pop-ups and there is no x to get out of them, I’ll leave the website and go back in and won’t see the ad the next time.
