Microsoft has announced a release date for the Windows 10 upgrade. The new operating system will be available for download on July 29.
Users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 will be able to upgrade for free starting July 29. Users will have one year from that date to take advantage of the free upgrade. Microsoft is encouraging users to make reservations for the upgrade.
Sometime soon, an icon should appear at the lower right corner of your computer.
Click on it for information on how to make your reservation.

I made my reservation for this. I tried to go back in to get my status of my reservation, I received a blank screen.
What I’m concerned about…..will the upgrade to Windows 10 affect the operation of any 3rd party software?
Absolutely I’ll sign up. You haven’t pointed out any failures in the Beta version, its lighter than Windows 7, which I’ve enjoyed, so definitely unless they make it impossible for older versions of Word, etc to work on it.
What happens if I download Windows 10 & don’t like it? Would I be able to re-install Windows 7 if I have the product code? Will I have to re-install all my programs? Don’t want to end up with another version of Vista.
@Bob.. You will probably be able to go back win7 but it will be a clean install just as it was when you first got your machine/OS.. Bad news in that you will definitely lose all your installed programs and any folders, pics and such if you don’t put them in a back-up before installing 10. why before? it’s not guaranteed that once you install win10 that going back to 7 would accept the new code that 10 used to reconfigure your win7 info.
Not certain. Reason is I do not trust Microsoft as there is no such thing as a free lunch. Will we eventually find that none of our old apps work and will have to buy new. ie new MS office even if we are quite happy with the version we have. Could end up being quite an expensive free operating system!

No. The free upgrade is permanent. However, if you wait longer than a year from the release date, you’ll have to pay for the upgrade.

I’ll be gone on the day that becomes available but I do want to download 10 to try it out. Hopefully I’ll be able to understand it. But if it’s like the 2010 upgrade for Microsoft Word that will not be good. I’m having so much trouble with that because of documents done in 2003 and 2007 – compatibility – means nothing works. Not happy about that.
Will definitely upgrade. Microsoft has analyzed all of the things people did not like about Windows 8 and I am sure that Windows 10 will bring the operating system up to snuff with current and future technologies. Kudos to Microsoft for realizing that not everyone uses Internet Explorer. Perhaps their new browser will be as good or better than Chrome.

For one of my personal computers I will try Windows 10, but as much as people seem to hate windows 8 I am finding 8.1 pretty nice. Although SOME things are harder to find and there IS a certain learning curve, overall it is not that bad. But changing over company computers is not something I even want to think about right now, so I think we might put that off until early fall at this point, that way we (IT staff)can get some time on the system so we can help the rest of the company transition more smoothly.
I agree with Jim here, even though I do my work for the company from home I have programs that must be able to run on win 10 that would not on win 8. Will run on one computer to see how it works with programs I have for work, but as for the other computers, going to wait a few months for them to work out bugs, after all, it will be available for a year.
I definitely will upgrade because I hate windows 8 and I`m hoping 10 will be better at any rate it has to be better than what I have now…
I have already signed up! Windows 10 promises to be even better than 8.1. While inveterate Window haters can say what they pathology will have them say more rational people can start having an even more pleasant interaction with their newly invigorated computer.
I recently received a notice (white window at the lower right of my taskbar).. filled it out and received the confirmation of reservation so I closed the window.. Still there, won’t go away.. Is that what it’s supposed to do? Stay around till 10 comes out? Am I the only one experiencing this? It’s not an eye sore but it’s really of no use any longer until the deadline for release comes out so why is it still lingering? Anybody know?

I will download to one computer, have not decided which yet. I have an older desktop that I’m concerned about upgrading to 10. When I upgraded from vista to 7 there were a couple of issues since. I’d like to see microsoft make a windows 10 upgrade advisor available as they did for 7, 8, and 8.1. I’ve been unable to find one yet. Does anyone know if one is available or planned?

I got an update offer on May 31st. on my computer but if they take Windows 7 away from me I will give up my computer as don’t want anything to do with this new stuff they put out. I don’t like symbols and characters on my computer as like to read what they really are. It is like looking at a foreign language to me.
The upgrade is voluntary, but if you like Windows 7, I think you’ll be fine with Windows 10.

I also got the offer to upgrade, I have 8.1 and while it took me awhile to get use to it (have had it a year) now that I understand it, I like it. What comes to mind at the moment, the “tiles” I thought I’d hate I really like since I found I could minimize them. Would like to have information about the differences between 8.1 & 10 before I decide to up grade, will fill out the reservation anyway.
I will upgrade. I have had nothing but trouble with Window 8 and 8.1. I can only hope the issues that seem to come from the operating system will be cleared up with 10. Its amazing how often I have to use my old computer with Vista while I wait for Windows 8 to update.

I was forced to buy Windows 8 then “given” 8.1. Every time I turn on the computer the first thing I do is click off that “tile mess” and get to the normal screen. Ever notice how Windows never builds anything that lasts? Here they go again. More than likely “10” will just be another money-grab for Windows.
We have 2 windows 7 laptops that are approaching 5 years old our older all in one printer units were for windows 98 and I don’t want to deal with new drivers or possible incompatibility issues at this time. Most likely we’ll need to replace our laptops in the next year or so and then of course will have windows 10 at that point. I do look forward to windows 10 but prefer to wait until the bugs, if any, are all worked out. Previously with windows, there have been initial incompatibility issues with software and printers which were eventurally fixed so prefer to wait, see how things go, continue learning about 10 and be ready when we purchase new equipment. Just our personal preferences.

I am undecided at this time. I am 84 and will take advice from friends with computer savvy before I make a decision. I might not even outlast the use of win 7 which is 2020.
I have Windows7 and am very satisfied with it. The problem is that Windows10 will not be compatible with some of my existing devices, programs and apps. I verified this and anyone can by clicking on the icon that appears on the lower right side. This brings up a new window titled “How this free upgrade works”. Then click on the menu icon in the upper left side which brings down a list of items: click on “Check your pc” and it will give you such information.
Personally, I will wait till Windows10 overcomes some of these problems. “If it ain’t broke why fix it!”

Yes i did do the reservation and also did a recovery set of disk incase of any problems with the upgrade. Will it(the little window) stay on my bar at the bottom even though I registered?And i am looking forward to it.
