Star Trek might have predicted the iPad, but tablets are hardly the hot new technology anymore. Now they are commonplace, just as smartphones, once thought impossible, are now the norm. It makes you wonder what the next big technology gadget will be. The great part about it is that the next wave of futuristic tech is already here, and even affordable for the average consumer. Here are some technological items that were once unaffordable but are now within your grasp.

The Electric Car

Until recently, the electric car was a little like the Loch Ness Monster. Everyone heard about it, but sightings were few and far between on city streets. Now, Tesla Motors has put electric cars on the road all over the world. With charge stations cropping up in major cities and strategically positioned locations, the support infrastructure has made the electric car desirable and practical.

While a Tesla Model S or X still comes with a price tag of about $70,000, they are available for lease for $575 a month. Furthermore, news has just surfaced that Tesla Motors will debut its Model 3 in March. The Model 3 comes in at half the price the S or X does, $35,000. This was confirmed by the CEO of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, in a Tweet on September 2. While the Model 3 won’t start production for another two years, pre-orders will start in March when it is debuted, rumors say, possibly in Geneva, Switzerland.

Wireless HD Cameras

Security cameras were once only for the wealthy and large businesses because of pricey hardware and steep monthly subscription fees. Times have changed with the advancement of technology. You can now own high-definition 1080p wireless home security cameras for a reasonable price. Connect wireless cameras to your router and then download the app on your phone so you can check in on your home no matter where you are.

Lorex Technologies sells security cameras with no monthly fees or installation fees, as you can install them yourself. A surveillance bundle with two cameras and a control station is as low as $279, or if you need a more extensive system, a 16-camera bundle will only cost you about $1,000.

3-D Printers

3-D printers are finally available for the public. These printers can manufacture a three-dimensional product from a digital file. The process starts with an image you build yourself. After you’ve made a image you simply load the plastic material, plug in your computer and print your image.

Whether it’s a garden tool, a spare key or a toy for your son or daughter, 3-D printers empower you to create whatever you need from the comfort of your own home. While there are many practical household applications for a 3-D printer, those within the medical profession believe that, in the future, replacement organs such as lungs, livers and even skin will be printed with this same technology. While this may be some years in the future, this technology can be found right now for your in-home use.
