Why Can’t I Attach PDFs?

Jerry has a question about sending PDF documents.  “I can’t send an email with a PDF attachment of more than 2 or 3 MB and get a message that my internet serversmpt has timed out. I don’t know if it’s a file size limit or having 750 kb service with CenturyLink  or what?  I read that zip files an such don’t reduce the size of a file that much so what can I do? Some of my research data is 15+ MB and I need to be able to email it.  Can you help please?”

Jerry, according to what I see on Century Links’s webpage, their attachment size limit is 20 MB.  A 750 KBS service should not be too slow to attach a file.

I’m wondering if the issue might not be  with the browser you’re using to access CenturyLink. Try another browser to see if that helps. Or if you’re using a wireless connection to a router, perhaps your device isn’t receiving at full speed.

I’d also suggest that you trying sending via another e-mail address such at Outlook.com or Gmail. These addresses also offer free cloud storage. You could upload your document and share the download link with the person you want to send it to. Then attachment size isn’t an issue.

    1. Jadesqr- Thank you so much for your reply. I don’t know if zipping the email will help, but I’ll try it. Thanks for the link too. Here’s my response to Cynthia below providing additional information:
Cynthia- This is the message I get from centurytel.net “Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.mw.centurytel.net timed out. Try again.” I’m using Windows Internet Explorer 11, Thunderbird for email acct. (I don’t have a gmail acct.), and centurytel.net for an email address when sending, NOT centurylink. I’ve tried to send this email ” http://www.i-sis.org.uk/pdf/Glyphosate_research_papers_compiled_by_Dr_Alex_Vasquez.pdf “, which is 6 MB and others that were larger or smaller. Every time I get the above “centurytel.net” response. I don’t know if it’s my browser, my router (I’ve tried to send both plugged and unplugged using my Window 7 computer), is it my isp provider centurytel.net or what. When I try to send it, it shows the email was sent 100%. but then instead of sending it, I get the timed out msg above. I check my Thunderbird sent file and it’s not showing it was sent, yet when I hit the email send button, it shows that it’s sending and goes from 0 to 100% while I’m watching it send the email and attachment, then it get the timed out msg. Is the problem my Internet Explorer, Thunderbird, router, centurytel.net, or what could it be?

If you don’t want to put the answer in Computer Tips, perhaps you could email me. I’ve tried to figure this problem out forever and I’m stumped. Boy, I sure hope you can figure this out. Thanks for all you do for all of us out here. You’re and educator and problem solver for all of us out here.
      Thank you.

    1. It sounds to me as if it could be an issue your e-mail provider. I suggest getting a Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo account and attempting to send. That will at least let you know if the issue is the connection or your e-mail provider.
